    Protecting story ideas?

You assume I have no background in physics. In fact I have advanced science degrees and a medical (MD) degree and have even taught college level physics. I am sorry you can not see the analogy.

    Protecting story ideas?

So I have an idea for a movie, here it is in less than one page: a handsome young lad, a poor artist, wins a ticket in a poker game to go to America on the Titanic. On the ship's journey he falls in love with a beautiful woman (whom he rescues from a suicidal attempt to jump overboard because...

    Protecting story ideas?

I have been brainstorming a half dozen story ideas for a screenplay, have each one fleshed out to about a page 'treatment' each. Is that enough specifics for copyright? I should think so. I know the stories will morph with time, but I want to protect the ideas before I share them with...

Clooney / Zellweger in Duluth MN monday

George Clooney and Renee Zellwegger are going to be in my town of Duluth MN monday, giving a PR speech outside our little Duluth Depot art museum / historical train station / theatre. It will be kind of cool to see some big stars here. A PR thing, they are promoting their new film coming out...

"Ellie Parker" ... even cheap DV can make it

Amazing. Here is a link to pics of that camcorder. http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=Sony+DCR+PC-100&btnG=Search+Images It really impresses upon me the importance of attaching a name to a feature if possible. Related to this: could one extrapolate this logic (I am being serious...

"Ellie Parker" ... even cheap DV can make it

I tried watching "Ellie Parker" yesterday, a feature DVD starring Naomi Watts (Ring, Ring 2, King Kong, etc)--sorry but I just could not continue watching the DVD; thus my critique here is done without a full viewing of the DVD. Read other reviews e.g. on BlockBuster for more critiques...

    Starting out as a producer?

I am a noob, but one book that perhaps others with more experience can comment on that I have read and reread and reread that seems to perhaps be good for a producer is "From Reel to Deal"...

    stories about weight loss (fat->normal)?

My goal for any such story would not be to make fun of fat people, although such scenes would likely occur such a screenplay. But the end goal would include showing that even fat people are people, and as Knightly said bring out themes of self-acceptance, etc. No disrespect intended to fat...

    Help with screenplay idea

Just free wheeling brainstorming, but I always think cause and effect. If the widower burns a bonfire with everything, that could cause a stir with the local firetowers or fire marshall depending on burning permits and all-- suppose the Ranger who comes to investigate ends up consoling the man...

    Help with screenplay idea

How long of a short do you envision? Is this going to be a two minute, five minute, twenty? other length? I have an idea for a happy ending but more info would help.

    First Draft complete !

Thank you. And yeah is a great accomplishment, to create a fictional world with real people, real fictional people-- they start coming alive, a strange godlike feeling. But also it is sobering to realize the work yet ahead on rewrites. And yeah, congrats to you on your second feature screenplay...

    First Draft complete !

Thank you. And yes the shine will wear thin fast--I told my mentor I expect to get quite a few lashings with the cat 'o nine tails, flog away. I really wanted to do some rewriting before sending it to her, but she wanted it, a horrible punishment for her-- I can not imagine what it must be like...

    First Draft complete !

I just emailed off my complete first draft of a feature film screenplay (my first feature length screenplay) to my mentor/consultant. Well, I just had to shout it out somewhere :D if even just virtually here on a forum, a major personal achievement for me. Whether it gets turned into an indie...

    The Prosumer Myth is bad

Hey Knightly-- being that you are a fellow Minnesotan you probably already know this, but Johnny Depp is making a movie with some of to be filmed just across the border in Wisconsin in a small town there, I forget the name, was just on the local news here in Duluth MN last night. Aside from...

    high concept v. simple plots+characterization

I watched "No Country for Old Men" last night. Powerful film. For such an action-oriented and violent film it struck me though how simple the plot was, no real high concept involved-- the plot was basically a search/recovery (of money) plot, also a survival (from killer) plot. No 'high...

% of WGA registrations that are shorts?

% of WGA registrations that are shorts?

Well I don't know about that. Anybody can register a script on wga. But then I wonder how many of those 40,000 are partial drafts, treatments, ideas, and of course just bad scripts, and also shorts. And therein is the beauty of screenplays-- completely under the control of the writer...

% of WGA registrations that are shorts?

Anybody have any idea what percent of wga registrations are shorts compared to features? I would think shorts exceed features. I ask because I saw a figure from googling that 40,000 scripts are registered with wga each year, meaning there is a glutton of registered scripts. And thus a bit...
