Films I Think I Should Be Able To Shoot

OK, I just re-watched it and there was one dolly shot when they are in the park, that I somehow missed. But still 99% is locked down.

    Prop Money

While we're on the subject of prop money, I once heard (or maybe read) somewhere that it was illegal to use real money in a film. I find that a bit hard to believe, but none the less it was put out there as fact by someone at some point. Any truth at all to it?

Films I Think I Should Be Able To Shoot

I caught another one over the weekend that would be simple as pie and take no budget to shoot - I Want Someone To Eat Cheese With. I'd seen it a few years ago but forgot about it. It might have one or two slider shots and maybe a simple small jib shot here and there, but for 99% of the film...

So what the hell are the breakdowns of low budget???

I didn't mean I wouldn't pay certain crew. I meant I wouldn't hire any nonessential crew in the first place - like personal assistants and stand-ins for every single cast member. Those things are nice, but you don't need them to make a good film. I'm talking about a crew of 6-8 versus a crew of...

So what the hell are the breakdowns of low budget???

To me NO BUDGET means just that . . . nothing spent on production. No paid cast or crew. Props and wardrobe entirely from what you can beg, borrow, or already own. All equipment used, same deal. Just pick up a camera and shoot. I'd call anything from $100 to $10,000 a Micro-Budget. But...

    Prop Money

In a similar vein, another of our prop requirements is newspapers with several different front-page headlines. I've decided to have a local web press (web as in the type of roll-fed press newspapers are printed on, not the internet) print me a small run of about an 8 page mock newspaper which...

Films I Think I Should Be Able To Shoot

A lot of critics derided CATCH .44 as a poor Tarantino rip-off, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought is was right on target. INSIDIOUS came closer to being a truly scary film than anything I've seen since The Exorcist. It was creepy for sure.

    Prop Money

I like your prop money a lot, Rok. Really like the idea of having the name of the film on it. I will be making some of my own prop money, which needs to look like US currency from the 1940s, for the next phase of our production, and believe I will add that touch myself. Will make good cheap...

Films I Think I Should Be Able To Shoot

I'd like to add one more film to the "I could so shoot that" list: Catch .44 I just watched it and thought it was a fantastic ride. It's one of those films that really gets me jazzed and motivated to do something similar, because it looked so easy and cheap to shoot but was so damned fun to...

    Prop Money

You can buy "movie money" from some prop houses, and even on eBay. The stuff I've seen looks a lot like a genuine bill, but says MOVIE MONEY on it, and also states: This is NOT legal tender for any debt public or private. Not sure if that is legally required, but it's on there.

Making a picture bring motion feel?

Here is a still from my current production using the same technique I believe you are talking about: A video of the actor composited over a static background plate. I believe the key is adding just the right amount background blur. (Seeing yours, I believe it may be blurred too much. But it...

    Cartoons

I concur 100%. You only need Photoshop and ONE of the other three. I prefer After Effects. A lot of people also still do their drawing by hand and then scan them into Photoshop, refine and colorize them there, and then animate them in After Effects.

Could I have a budget this low for this type of movie?

I'm just amused, and more than a bit bemused, at the idea that many of us who are able to write, produce, direct, shoot, edit, and even do our own VFX and musical scores, would be somehow unable to handle the finished audio on our own as well. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, and...

Could I have a budget this low for this type of movie?

OK, Mr. Audio Post Expert, you win. We admit it: We writers, directors, DPs, general renaissance men, and other creative types NEED YOU. Although we've managed just fine with all the other aspects of filmmaking, your job is the one important part we will never be able to accomplish on our own...

    Why does 24fps look choppy?

I think someone in this thread has already suggested this, but I'll reiterate: Why not do your pan nice and slow, then speed it up as much as you desire in post? That way there are no rolling shutter issue and you'll have full control over the pan speed when editing your footage. You can even...

Do I have to worry about the law when it comes to these types of lights?

I imagine there will still be plenty of bulbs to choose from even after all those listed are phased out.

    Period Script for Sale

Depends on how you shoot it. We are doing our current film, a period piece set in the late 1940s, using mostly virtual sets. It's a very limited cast, so wardrobe and hand props (all period correct) were not that overwhelming nor expensive to assemble. For our few practical sets (exterior...

    Porn question

I don't live in Navada, so you probably know more than I, but isn't the prostitution there only legal inside the licensed brothels? That would mean you could only shoot your porn in a brothel. However, I don't really buy the pandering and prostitution angle on porn and believe there are surely...

FILMMAKERS: What films would you like to make in your career?

Probably no real historical mobster in particular. It would most likely be a work of pure fiction along the lines of Miller's Crossing, Road To Perdition, Last Man Standing, etc. I love the idea of adapting a classic Samurai or Western tale into a prohibition-era gangster film like they did...
