    lighting cameraman

"Lighting Cameraman" is the British version of Director of Photography. In American productions of any size, the DP (or cinematographer, or cameraman) often doesn't operate the camera - the camera operator does, along with the 1st assistant cameraman pulling focus and running the machine. The...

watch "Web of Lies" short film noir coming Nov

Thanks, Steve. I couldn't figure that out, so posted just the link to Vimeo, better quality, but I'll fix the YouTube id. I tried to post a picture from Flickr, but it didn't like that, either. I think I have a still up on a server, but I've forgotten which.

watch "Web of Lies" short film noir coming Nov

I've got a short film noir that has been playing the festival circuit for the past year, to good reviews. We'll be releasing it in November for general web consumption. I may have posted this back in December or January, but here's the trailer on Vimeo, in anticipation of the coming release...

Colour correcting - what am I doing...???

The Apple Pro Training set of books is excellent. There is one for Color. Yes I know it's no longer supported, but the basics are the same for Davinci Resolve or for After Effects. The book comes with a DVD of material for correction - don't skip this and go right to your own project...

    Question about hiring a colorist.

Sixteen minutes? Then yes, you might find someone willing to take that on for a week or so. Is there a film community where you live? Not just filmmakers but film technicians? There may be someone, such as myself, interested in grading a project for the experience and for their reel. This...

    Question about hiring a colorist.

Coloring a full-length feature will take weeks of full-time work. Can you afford to work for free for three or four weeks? If you're willing to take more time, and take chances, you may be able to find a film school student who'll do it for pizza on weekends over a few months.

how to light a moving camera

Forget the three-point lighting. Try to source or motivate the light from windows or lamps along the way. If there are no lights, invent them (oh, look, there's that chandelier we didn't see!). Don't be afraid to have your characters go through shadows. Typically in the case of moving...

    Advice on doing ADR.

Find a room that's reasonably quiet and not echo-y. Avoid rooms that are cubical especially, and the more walls that aren't flat to each other is better. The point of a shotgun microphone is to get good sound without getting in the shot. Since there is no camera in ADR, use whichever mic...

Filming with Expired 16mm Film; Developing

If you're going for a straight look you might have problems, but if you've got a script that calls for dream sequences, fantasy, etc., or a music video, then just go with it and embrace the result. You probably would want to make sure that you're covered in case one roll is completely ruined...

Bell & Howell 8mm film Cameras

The cartridges come pre-loaded; I can't imagine trying to do that myself. Good luck finding them, but there are still sources. Cartridges mean they are probably Super 8 film (not the older standard 8 - I think the difference is room for sound, and the cartridge). There was a 'Split 8' format...

a few questions about music for short films

    1. Yes. 2 and 3. There are a lot of sites that offer music (search on "royalty-free" + "music" or "score", etc). Sonicfire is one I've purchased music from, and their scoring software offers unique flexibility in adapting a piece of music to your film. In addition check with musicians in your...

    cloning people

The best free tutorials around are from Andrew Kramer at Video Copilot. You have to put up with his sense of humor, but he knows what he's talking about and conveys information very well. About a year ago he posted a video (link below) with much the same effect as you're looking for. He has...

    My script idea

One way: use an effect (ee.gg. lens is his moving POV, or scene is tinged a particular color, or sounds are incredibly crisp - something you could write into a script) whenever he's having the fantasy. Allow the script to play out in such a way that the audience can imagine this IS a fantasy...

Does the main character have to be liked?

I think GuerillaAngel makes a good point - care about them, but not necessarily 'like'. The anti-hero (Mad Max, Dirty Harry, in fact a lot of Eastwood characters) can be all kinds of bad, but they accomplish good things, and we come to care about them because of what they do, not how they do...

Sound Design Project - Looking for Material To Work To

For raw sound resources: http://www.freesound.org (pay attention to the Creative Commons licenses - you must attribute) You can also go record your own. Frequently 'creature' and FX sounds are normal sounds sped up, slowed down, remixed and played with. In the original Star Wars the sound of...

    An Idea For A Proposal . . .

The link you're showing as a "Wonder Woman Rough Cut" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnRVodCZV_k ) is not a rough cut of anything - it's some video shot by an onlooker near (not on) the set. That's not what the show is going to look like. If you can't see what's going on there, you need to...

Am I not bossy enough as director?

If you think it's bad with friends, try doing it with film students. "I'm a P.A., but I'm really a director."

    An Idea For A Proposal . . .

Can you show them completed work that looks as good as what they are used to? Can you demonstrate a track record (even a short record), shot with the production personnel you're pitching, of getting the job done, with a good-looking product? If so, maybe. If not, no.

    Muzzle Flash Feedback please?

basically good, but too clean and crisp looking; I'm thinking the muzzle blast was probably too big and bright for reality, but okay for an action flick. The lighting effect worked well. The sound does not sell (the plastic clicking noises).
