why do small indie films need AD's and such

    4. Wants an agenda-driven discussion. He was convinced he could do without an AD, came here for reinforcement, and when he didn't get it he resorted to slinging insults. Just because you can handle it all yourself, doesn't mean you need to. I did a 48 Hour Film Project a few weeks ago and we...

    Small and Somewhat Pocketable Camcorder

I'm on the BM Pocket bandwagon. I ordered the day it went on sale after doing quick, extensive research. The deciding factor for me was this post from LinkedIn: "If you pair the BMPCC with the Metabones Speedbooster you'll have a camera with essentially a Super35 field of view that's more...

The viewer must be knowledgeable about the film's subject to enjoy it?

Consider "The King of Kong", which is about a video game competition that is really only appreciated by a specific subculture. The movie did well across a wide audience though, because the filmmaker intelligently focused on the quirky characters involved. My sister, who is neither a video game...

Great team name!! Nice work with the trailer too, I look forward to seeing your film.

Do you need a drivers license to be a Runner?

Best minimum wage job I've ever had! On that note, though, I would say to the OP that working as a runner can be hard work but it's also very rewarding. You're exposed to every aspect of the production and meet a ton of great people. If you do a good job they'll remember you and that could lead...

Do you need a drivers license to be a Runner?

It depends on the gig, I guess. Some jobs will require a drivers license while others won't. If a job is down to you and another guy who has a driver's license, I would expect the job to go to the other guy. When I was 17 I worked as a runner for a concert venue. My job was to basically do all...

Seeking Advice. First Project. 48hr-film contest.

About a week before the best of screening, keep an eye on your email or the Louisville 48HFP Facebook page. They will announce the list of films to be shown at the Best Of. If your movie is nominated for even one award, it will be shown at that screening. I've heard that not every city does...

Seeking Advice. First Project. 48hr-film contest.

Congratulations!! I heard that on average, 20% of teams worldwide either miss the deadline or don't turn in their film at all. In my screening group one team fell apart due to creative differences the first night. I know you're not allowed to post the movie online yet, but please do link it...

    cinematography Flashes?

I highly doubt those were created practically. The effects were a bit different in the two videos you posted, but both appear to have been done in post. FCPX has a built-in transition that looks a bit like the second video, and the first video looks like the effect could have been created easily.

    BMPCC lens questions

Will, do you have any experience with the Redrock Micro LiveLens? It adapts the EF to M4/3 mount and electronically controls the lens' internal iris. I picked up one of those from eBay just to get me going until I buy the Metabones one.

    BM Pocket Camera now half-price

I'm jealous.... This morning in the mail I received the batteries and the LiveLens adaptor, and no camera to use them with. The camera is still back ordered until at least next week!

Shooting a concert - Need some help

A single take of a band doesn't look very professional, IMO. Ideally you'd use two cameras and two camera ops, but if that's not possible you can frame a wide fixed shot of the stage with the extra camera. Your camera should be focusing on medium and tight shots of the performers and their...

    editing Codec Question

I did a 48HFP a month ago and used H.264. I wouldn't be too concerned about the lossy format - everybody was required to submit that codec and all the films looked really great on the big screen.

Your Dream Job & Your Real Job

You're doing great for 23. You're making money and being realistic, which is much better than many who think they'll become a big movie director straight out of college. Many of them end up in the service industry, or freelancing as a PA for a reality TV series that gets them nowhere. Keep...

archived-videos thoughts on my improv short film?

I've seen some real dog poo short films and the creators couldn't accept any criticism whatsoever. You've already established your limitations, posted it, and asked for honest advice. We can make nitpicky criticisms all day but I will say I really liked your camera work. With a little grading...

    Audio for Portable Film-Making (Run-and-Gun)

The audio guy in the thread will be able to give better advice than I can but I'd like to comment on the external recorder option. Yes, you need an external recorder. I've used the H4N and Tascam DR-100. The Tascam is great as you can adjust the left and right channels individually, while the...

    Struggling artists

To echo the first reply, check out "It's So Easy (And Other Lies)" by Duff McKagan. He does an outstanding job conveying what life was life as a dirt-poor musician, building a massive local fan base for Guns N Roses before anyone knew who they were.

Simple adapter vs Focal Reducer - worth the extra $?

Awesome, thanks for the info. I was thinking of picking up a non-focal reducing adapter now and using that until I can get my hands on the metabones one. I won't count on that before my 8/31 shoot, but I'll be happy if I know the video quality will be decent (just very cropped).

Simple adapter vs Focal Reducer - worth the extra $?

Lens adapter vs Focal Reducer - worth the extra $? I just took advantage of the Blackmagic Pocket Camera's price break. It's back ordered so I'm going to have to wait a few weeks for the camera, but I am trying to prepare for a shoot on August 31 in which I'd like to use it (assuming it's in by...

Great info, thanks for posting it. I would have gone straight for a handful of 32's had I not read that list.
