archived-videos First test shots with Canon T3i/600D

Hey everyone! I recently bought a Canon Rebel T3i/600D (it was a steal at only $550 with kit lens included), and did a few test shots the other day. I'm very new at shooting with a DSLR, and everything is handheld*, but I was wondering what everybody thought of it. :)...

editing What NLE Do You Use?

I tried Avid, and I've messed around with a LOT of video editing software, and couldn't believe how complicated I found it. There were just so many buttons/menus/options that even after spending a couple of days learning it, I just couldn't quite grasp it. I couldn't even figure out how to...

    cinematography Death of the DSLR?

DSLR's aren't dying. The Canon Txi series is certainly a more budget-friendly option than even the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera (I just bought a T3i for $550 off of Amazon, lens included), and because of that more people who are starting out will probably go the DSLR route. It's true...

    archived-videos Finding Johnny- Short Film

It was good! Not sure why no one else has commented. I liked the framing and the audio, and definitely thought it was a touching short. Good job!

J.J. Abrams Will Not Helm Star Trek 3

If he wasn't a fan then why the heck did he make the movie? :P I wonder who will replace him, although I really don't care that much as long as the film will be good! I'm kinda glad that he's stepping down, even though he's one of my favorite directors I hate his overuse of lens flares...

How to make video look like movies from the late 80s/early 90s?

A lot of the look will also be framing, composition and camera movement. Movies from the 80s and 90s weren't so in to the whole "handheld" look like a lot of movies today. Another is the lack of heavy color grading. Back in the day, if the people making the movie wanted a scene to look a...

archived-videos Little short we just finished!

Haha, awesome! Definitely enjoyed it. :) My only complaint is that the audio seemed a little fuzzy, but it was still decent quality. Loved the part where the agent breaks the guy's neck! :D * *This makes me sound like a psycho, but watch the video and you'll see why!

editing What NLE Do You Use?

Right now, I'm using Adobe CC. It's quite nice, despite the controversy of the subscription model. But really, how can you not like having Adobe After Effects, Premiere, SpeedGrade, Audition and Photoshop in your arsenal for $50/month? I love Premiere Pro CC, it handles everything I've thrown...

EVERYTHING I've EVER wanted in a movie!

I've had the same problem with a few of my ideas. One idea in particular had so many different parts to the story, it would've taken 20 minutes of finished footage to tell just the first part of it... After a while, you learn to whittle it down, keeping the essential elements in and ditching...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

Yeah, I meant on the 2.5K Cinema Cam, since I do want to upgrade to that someday. That was my plan all along, although with the Pocket Cam I would've waited a little longer! :)

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

So even though I said I wasn't gonna change my mind again... :D I just went ahead and ordered a Canon T3i from Amazon. It isn't because I didn't want the Pocket Cam, or because I was scared of the problems with it, it's because I can't afford to wait until as late as next year in order to get a...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

Extremely good and valid point! I was thinking of getting the $129 64GB SanDisk Extreme back when I was planning on getting a DSLR anyway, because it was rated extremely high on Amazon and was recommended by some friends. Good money for good quality! As for the dropped frame issue, I can only...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

OK, so as long as I use either of those cards things will be alright? :) Glad to hear it's not really that big of an issue after all!

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

....Auuuugh! Now I'm reading about random dropped frame issues, from the comments in this video over on Vimeo. That's kind of a MAJOR PROBLEM! Could be a couple of faulty cards the guy was using, at least that's what I hope... and if it proves to be a more widespread issue, I hope it's fixable...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

Do you mean the resolution on the screen? It's 800 x 480px, over a 3.5" screen should be plenty sharp enough for basic use, but I imagine people will want to buy a full HD external viewing monitor. :P Ooh, just found this video on Vimeo, definitely shot before any recalibration, and it's...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

OK, there was a firmware updatefor the BMPCC released today (according to the main thread I linked to), fixing the "black spot" problem, and then someone showed some screenshots from a new model they bought this week showing no unnatural blooming from straight white light! Ok, forget it, I'll...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

Thanks brunerww! For recording audio, would you recommend the use of the Zoom H6 with its XLR inputs? I really would like to get the best audio I possibly can for my projects, and so far that H6 looks and sounds really good! As for those videos, they look really good, but I can still see a...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

I'm hearing of the issues from the discussion on the Blackmagic forums. On the previous page of that topic is where someone documents their troubles with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, and other people showing their recalibrated cameras still showing orbs. There's no denying the image quality...

Balckmagic Pocket Camera: What would be good lenses for it?

OK, well the "fix" Blackmagic said worked, doesn't. And now the dreaded orbs are appearing on some 2.5K raw Cinema Cameras, too, indicating it's a big problem from the sensor manufacturer, but there's been no further word from Blackmagic. So, I am definitely getting the GH3, and I have some...

Use of widescreen bars in your films?

I think for more dramatic/serious films, slapping a 2:35:1 letterbox over the footage could help create that feeling, primarily because almost every other film of that nature seems to always be anamorphic. Or, if you're trying to create an "old cinematic" look, it could help with that, as well...
