Rode NTG-1 Kit: A good deal?

This is very true, but sadly I live in an area where there aren't that many fellow filmmakers around - closest is the Rockford/Chicago area and I'm about two hours north of there...and without a car of my own (which is a problem that I will fix soon so I can open up my options a bit more), you...

Rode NTG-1 Kit: A good deal?

Hey guys, I decided before I buy any more lenses or fancy editing software, something I should save up for over the next couple of months is audio gear. Right now all I have is the built-in mic on my T3i, and we all know that produces absolute crap! So, I went on B&H Photo, and found...

    cinematography Changing aspect ratio mid-film

That's not cool! I wonder why that is? If YouTube can support different aspect ratios (with OR without letter/pillar boxing!), surely Amazon/Createspace would be able to do the same? That just seems ultra picky to me.

Indeed! Not to mention Windows can't run some cool programs like Logic Pro or FCP! ;)

Use letterbox masks then? Have the whole thing technically be 16:9 and mask out the parts you want to look wider?

archived-videos What do you think of my logo?

The cyan rectangle was indeed a reference to to the THX logo - and if you listen closely to the sound mix as well, you'll notice a similar "sweeping" sound underneath the tinkling, though of course it's not at all the same sound as I didn't want to get sued. :P That's also why in the final...

editing need a new computer for editing i had questions

Wow, that is quite a huge jump in money... kind of makes me sick, honestly! Now I kind of wish I had just stuck with building a custom PC instead of buying an iMac for editing purposes. I love Mac OS X though, and my iMac is really decently powerful, but there's no way it can handle 4K very...

editing need a new computer for editing i had questions

I'd say at least another $850 - $1000 more, plus an extra $30 for the glossy/pretty factor... Yes, now that I've used the trial of FCP X everyday for about half a month, I can definitely say it's a pretty damn good NLE, and yes, several of the features are hidden, primarily audio editing and...

editing need a new computer for editing i had questions

Oh my God... now I want the Mac Pro even more! Some of those tests are just silly! See, and that's the benefit of going the Mac route... because they developed both FCP X and the Mac Pro for each other, it's a lovely marriage of video-edity goodness! It's just too bad FCP X is still missing...

editing need a new computer for editing i had questions

This made me lol pretty hard! Haha. As everybody else said, it depends on what you're editing. If you're just editing regular DSLR footage at 1080p, it will be GLORIOUSLY fast and WAAAY more power than you need. But if you're going to work on 4K stuff, the entry-level Mac Pro might stutter a...

Having a problem with Premiere Pro.

Who doesn't? I remember when I first started out I kept running into strange issues. Google was my friend then! h44, you should have a better backup system in place - even something like dropbox. ALWAYS create two versions of your project, with a naming convention like "[project name]...

Creating an online free film course.

It's a good idea, but there are already so many channels that do this. Indy Mogul (although YouTube cancelled them last December), Film Riot, Filmmaker IQ, VideoMaker.com, Vimeo's Video School, and Creative Cow are all ones I can name off the top of my head. That said, filmmaking is a very...

cinematography Question about using 'picture styles'.

Use Technicolor's CineStyle preset (google it!). It records everything in flat, unsharpened format that allows you to more easily color correct and grade in post, and gives you a lot more room in post than using any of the other Canon picture styles. Seriously, it's a great preset, I use it...

    Need ideas for more lenses!

It's horrible for your sensor anyway! ;) I've heard that it's got some weird line issues and is terrible in low-light situations... since a couple of films I want to shoot are black-and-white film noir, I sort of need a low-light capable camera AND lens (hence why that was one of the first...

    Need ideas for more lenses!

Oh, I would definitely keep the current camera as a B-Camera! Unless I could get several hundred dollars for it and the lens to go towards the 5D... then I might consider it. :P But by the time I could even start to think to buy it, I'm sure the MK IV will be out, and I'll be able to get it...

    Need ideas for more lenses!

Not compatible for full-frame? That's a bit of a shame, since I eventually want to upgrade to the 5D MK III (or MK IV probably, by the time I can afford it :P ). Regardless, I still think the Sigma would be a really good lens to start off with!
