    Best Screewriting Books

Personally, I think the "bible" of screenwriting texts is "Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting" by Syd Field. Excellent book with MANY recent examples (in the updated editions) to make everything easier to understand.

No Storyboard, No Shot List Directors

Spielberg famously shot the entire opening scene of Saving Private Ryan without a shot list or storyboards, and that scene turned out as one of the greatest battle scenes (if not THE greatest) ever put on film. Like mckinise said above, it comes down to experience, and I think confidence as well..

    The History Channel...

Overly simplistic and far from accurate. Just as simplistic would be to say that the far right wants everyone to believe as they do, while the far left believes that everyone should be able to think and choose for themselves. Neither are entirely accurate.

    DSLR vs "Straight" Camcorders

I agree with Artorius' original point. And I know I'll get dog piled on for this too, but the OP was simply asking people to watch the video he prepared and give their opinion of the camera based on his video. He wasn't asking for you to point out why and how his methodology was flawed or how to...

story PIXAR's 22 rules of storytelling

I disagree. Even with an anti-hero, there's got to be something to allow the audience to identify with him/her, or else they have no one to root for in the story. These rules will apply to all writing, it's just HOW you apply them that matters. Personally, I think #19 is golden. I hate when...

What's the big deal about Shakespeare?

What turned me around on Shakespeare and made me start loving his work, was seeing Julius Caesar performed when I was in high school. And not just performed, but performed well. I admit, when I had first started reading the plays for English classes, it was like reading the dictionary. It was...

How do you write a screenplay to an adapted screenplay?

I think what DeJager said about having the rights to a novel is the key. I wouldn't spend time writing a spec script that's based on material you don't have the rights to. What happens when you spend 6 months adapting a book you love only to find out that a studio has already bought the rights...

MPAA: Why Sex Is Worse Than Violence

This is obviously a culture thing. I don't look at sex as indecent. I DO look at violence as the most indecent thing anyone can do to another person. The fact that violence happens in the street more often than sex is a pitiful excuse to say it should be more acceptable in cinema.

MPAA: Why Sex Is Worse Than Violence

I agree with the sentiment, Sweetie, but there's such a stigma surrounding an "R" rating that it could mean the difference between a movie making a profit or not, and it could simply be due to them saying the F-word once as compared to twice. That's arbitrary IMO. Is there truly a difference...

MPAA: Why Sex Is Worse Than Violence

As a parent of two children, I'm MUCH more worried about the level of violence my kids see in film than of any sex scenes. And it would be my choice as far what's inappropriate for them.

MPAA: Why Sex Is Worse Than Violence

Sorry, violence is not less realistic than sex in most US films. But because it's considered much less taboo than sex, most people in this country have been desensitized to it, so it seems that way. Besides, how many people do you know that have sex compared to getting into brutal fights on a...

MPAA: Why Sex Is Worse Than Violence

Sex is considered worse than violence only because of the tight-assed puritan douchebags that feel sex is morally wrong for any reason other than procreation. I find that violence has a much bigger desensitizing effect on kids than watching a sex scene. This country has it's priorities ass-backward.

    Rolls Mixers

Since I already have a Zoom H4n, would using a mixer along the lines of a Rolls MX 410 or MX 422 (which I know aren't professional grade equipment) improve the overall signal to the Zoom and make for better audio capture? I can get the MX422 for around $280 delivered. Worth it?

cinematography Should I hire a DP who is inexperienced at shooting action scenes?

This is why I asked you months ago why you want to "star" in your own film. If you have the knowledge to get what you want from your shots, why not drop the acting part and DP it yourself? It would easier to find an actor than a DP to work for nothing.

    archived-videos Day-for-Night

You can shoot the sky, or any other feature you want. The trick is that you have to track the shot, matte each different element, and correct them each separately. That and the light elements FrankLad was talking about. I see the flashlight in the shot you had, but it wasn't illuminated. Track...
