    Makeshift Dolly?

Hey guys, i'm thinking of using a few camera tracks in my next film and I need a smooth dolly, but I don't particularly have the financial resources to purchase one. I've used a computer chair for a dolly before, but was wondering if there is any better way of doing it. The computer chair tends...

    Quitting the day job

Yeah, if you have the financial means to give up your day job then it would give you more time to focus on film making. You just have to consider if it's viable at this time, if not keep throwing your productions out there and hopefully you'll be able to some time soon down the line.

archived-videos "Tempterism", "Together Forever" and "The Dinner of Two" - A Few Short Films

Sorry for the bump guys - but if anyone else has some advice on these films i'd really appreciate hearing it. I'm aware that my films need work so anything you have to offer would be useful, if you want to. Thanks!

    archived-videos Splinter Cell massive shootout

You've got some good stuff here Vienna. I particularly liked the Splinter Cell video...it's mostly on target with the sound and visual effects. There are some very nice camera shots and movements in both, and you manage to pull off the chaos of both situations well...though I would have liked...

    Online Film Promotion Advice

Thanks Blade Jones, so you're saying I should create a simple page with some external links to my films? That does sound like an interesting idea - I tried out Milk and Cookies and it got me a little exposure, but I don't think it's best suited to the film I was putting out there. It appears to...

editing I need help with a video I am working on !! I got some talent yall !!

I can't offer too much advice about how you're going to construct this, fry112, but I would say that you do indeed need to not be afraid of the reaction you will get if you did request this at your school. The worst that can happen is that they say no, in which case you could contact a nearby...

Changing Depth of Field in a Sony Handycam

Yeah, when I used depth of field on my Samsung DV camcorder I found that the more I zoomed in on a faraway object to place it in focus, the sharper it became in the foreground. Give it a go. If this doesn't work for you then there probably is another solution.

The 7 Deadly Sins New Filmmakers Make

Directorik, you couldn't be more correct in your previous post. I know that I have a long way to go as a filmmaker but I've already come a long way from starting out by filming with very little idea of what I was doing. And like all aspects of life, the more you do it, the better you get at it...

In Need of a New Digital Camcorder and Sound Recording Gear - Advice?

Yeah, I would like to know more about that. A zoom lens is something that isn't essential, but I would like one. I wouldn't be able to pay more than £300-400 for one, would you recommend any?

    archived-videos 550D First upload + Production titles.

I'm not going to join in too much, but on the seemingly most important topic here, yes. The video quality is very good, the lighting was very good to you here! It gives off an eerie, dreamlike effect that, whether intentional or not, is a very impressive aesthetic. Looking forward to seeing...

In Need of a New Digital Camcorder and Sound Recording Gear - Advice?

Hey guys! My last DV camera recently expired during the shooting of my latest film, and I haven't decided which one to purchase yet. It's a somewhat difficult decision as the camera I had before, a Samsung, was very reliable and you could do some very cool things with it. One technique I learned...

How to direct and not come off as a jerk?

If you're looking to be a director who achieves exactly what he sets out to create (a fine decision, I think), you MUST not allow things to not go your way. Be it through friendship ties or a worry of upsetting a crew member, as long as you are assertive and professional with your crew and have...

lighting Another newb question on lighting

I was completely new to lighting setups until recently myself and i've found that yes, you will need to change lighting around if you're going to utilise an array of different shots. It can e laborious and time consuming to move them around so if you know the lighting setups exactly for each...

    Online Film Promotion Advice

Thanks a lot for the advice LFO! I'm interested in what you're saying but I need some further explanation on the idea of having opt-ins for email lists and link wheels. How do I go about constructing these, and is there an effective way of getting a lot of exposure on them? I'm going to put my...

The 7 Deadly Sins New Filmmakers Make

I agree that these seven sins are something a lot of new filmmakers may make, but they're not necessarily detrmiental to a film's success if they are mistakes to learn from and grow. I know i've done all of these in the five years i've been making short films now, and while I wouldn't do them...

    Too Pretentious To Direct

Directorik has some very good advice, and making short films is something i've been doing over the past year. It's a good way to consider what needs to be in a film and what doesn't, and, especially if you plan it properly, will help you effectively produce a concise film in a short time. I too...

    Online Film Promotion Advice

It's for both of them - i'm putting it out there for people to see but would also like to put it around a place that would get it seen by many filmmakers and offer some useful feedback. It's not for profit, only for advice. Can anyone recommend any others? Thanks a lot for the link to...

    Online Film Promotion Advice

Hey guys! Some of you might have seen that i've done a few shorts that are up in the Screening>Narrative (/shamelessplug) forum, which are all hosted on my Youtube and while that has helped their exposure, i'm finding it difficult to discover places where it's going to be seen. I'm not very...
