FILMMAKERS: What films would you like to make in your career?

I've got a few: 1) Post-apocalyptic vampire story (I'd like to do either a series of films or a webseries for this) — no sparkles 2) A low-budget drama set in my local area (wouldn't mind doing more than one of these) 3) Dark fantasy (possibly even like a long-form music video) 4) Tons of music...

cinematography Do you prefer Film or Digital Cinematography ?

This nails exactly why I prefer digital to film. To me, grain is a negative. Do you see grain in real life? No, you don't. Grain reminds me that I'm watching a movie. It's a barrier to full immersion. Eliminate the grain, and I can get that much more invested in the story I'm watching...

cinematography Do you prefer Film or Digital Cinematography ?

Digital. Not just for the ease it offers, but I actually prefer the look. ETA: I prefer the look of high-end digital cinema cameras like the Alexa, though even some DSLRs and lower-end cameras have a look I really like.

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

I've been on a bad disaster movie kick lately... Post Impact: 3/10 (this one got an extra point for Dean Cain with a beard) Vanishing on Seventh Street: 6/10 (I want to rewatch this one, had a hard time really getting into it, but I feel like it's maybe better than I'm giving it credit for...

Budget Equipment for a Remote Shoot

I was looking at those and wasn't sure whether they were worth buying. I'll add them to my "to-buy" list. We're borrowing from the bears. ;) This will be made clear to everyone who's going along on the shoot, so there are no surprises... (I honestly wish I was kidding, but there's not...

Budget Equipment for a Remote Shoot

There are plenty of windows in most of the buildings, as well as holes in the walls/ceilings in a lot of them. I'm hoping that by creative placement of the band and supplementing and reflecting the available light, I can get something passable. Generator will be borrowed if possible. My...

Budget Equipment for a Remote Shoot

No department heads (yet?). I'm acting as DP/camera op, me and one of the guys in the band are co-producing/directing, and as of right now, I don't even have an AD or PAs (I've got a few people in mind, but am waiting until we nail down a date, which will hopefully happen very soon). I'm...

Budget Equipment for a Remote Shoot

I'm shooting a music video at an abandoned Cold-War-era air force station (with permission). The location is roughly 4.5 miles from the nearest non-private road, and roughly an hour from the nearest real town. There's no power, no lights, and no people around for miles. Access is pretty much...

Flycam Nano DSLR vs 3000 vs 5000

That's what I've heard. Seems to be an issue on all of the Flycam models, though it also seems to be hit or miss on how difficult each one is to balance. I'm prepared for it to be a pain. The Glidecam is supposed to be a lot easier to balance, but unfortunately that's just not in the budget at...

Flycam Nano DSLR vs 3000 vs 5000

Decided to go with the Nano DSLR. Seems like a lot of people are of the opinion that it's better to be closer to the weight limit for a stabilizer, and I'm pretty sure my camera kit is weighing in at less than 3 pounds, which puts it squarely in the weight range for the Nano. I'll post test...

    Location Questions

So that was easier than expected once I actually got the guy on the phone (which took 4 tries once I found the right number). I quickly introduced myself, told him I was working with a local band to make a music video, and we'd like to use the old base. His answer? "Of course you can! You not...

Flycam Nano DSLR vs 3000 vs 5000

Just sold my Nikon DSLR so that I can buy a stabilizer for an upcoming music video shoot. I'm pretty sure the Flycam is going to give me the best bang for my buck (I'm looking to spend between $200-$300) but I'm not sure which model to get, the Nano DSLR, the 3000, or the 5000. I'm using a GH1...

    Location Questions

I like that approach. Except I'll probably omit the offer of payment. I think I'm going to try calling tomorrow and hope the number is in service. Fingers crossed the guy thinks it's the most wonderful idea he's ever heard.

    Location Questions

I've Googled the guy and can't find much info about him, other than he graduated from Harvard with a BS in Psychology and owns a number of hydroelectric power plants. Not sure if I can make either of those work for me.

    Location Questions

I'm going to be doing a music video for a friend's band in the upcoming months. We've got the perfect location in mind, and I've been tracking down contact information for the property owner. I finally found out who owns it and got a mailing address (thank you small town Town Clerks who are...

    Films and You: A Questionaire

    1) A CHERISHED CHILDHOOD FAVOURITE Labyrinth. The scene with the Escher-esque stairs fascinated me. 2) A FILM THAT SPARKED AN INTEREST IN FILMMAKING Reality Bites. I still watch it all the time. 3) ONE FILMMAKER YOU REALLY ADMIRE There are so many, but I'll go with Joss Whedon. 4) A FILM YOU...

    $5,000 asking price on Kickstarter?

You're in Canada? Then you can't use Kickstarter at all (it's only open to US residents), unless you have someone in the US who's involved in the campaign and can run it for you. IndieGoGo allows international campaigns.

Antihero got a limited theatrical engagement

That's awesome! I might just be in NYC around that time (I know I want to go down at least 1-2 more times this year), and will definitely go if I am. Looks like an awesome theater!

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Following - 8/10 Considering the budget ($6,000, it grossed 7X that), and the other restrictions, it's a pretty amazing film. Completely enjoyable and a unique concept. And it launched Christopher Nolan's career, which alone makes it worth watching.
