    Best Documentary of All Time

I've only seen a few but my favorite would have to Religulous. I'm looking forward to the new Beatles documentary directed by Martin Scorsese. I think it's coming on HBO in a few weeks.

    Trying to set a goal.

I know this doesn't answer your question but it's more inspirational referencing. Larry David, creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, didn't start his own show until he was like 42 or something. He's since then created around 200 sitcom episodes.

    Eddie Murphy Hosting Oscars

When Chris Rock hosted it was a disaster. A veteran comedian like Murphy can do it though. Steve Martin kills it whenever he hosts. I'm looking forward to it.

What genre works best in indie?

I think his point was that a genre like comedy, when done right, can transcend low production values, bad acting, and cheap sets. It would be harder to convince the audience to take something seriously (which is necessary for a drama) when the sound is crappy, the camera quality is dirty and...

    editing Anybody abandoning FCP...for good?

Did you have trouble making the jump? I've heard FCP 7 and CS5 are pretty transferable.

    editing Anybody abandoning FCP...for good?

Since Apple is stopping the sale of FCP 7 / FCP Studio 3, are you going to switch to Avid or Premiere...or are you going to stick with FCP 10 (aka iMovie 2)?

archived-videos JOHN WILHELM- funny action short

I liked the parody of the Wilhelm scream. I felt like I was playing a ten year old shooter arcade game where every attacker screams the same way. I do think though, that the parody was a little too subtle. It could've easily been confused for just lazy sound effects. Adding some slow motion...

    Dissecting movies -- Signs

I wonder why people tend to be on such opposite ends of the spectrum, when it comes to Shyamalan. They're usually either major fans or can't stand the guys work. I guess it's better than just having a lot of so-so neutral fans. I didn't really enjoy signs, it seemed a bit stretched out for...

What genre works best in indie?

I agree. If I dish out any money to go to a theater, it's for a comedy. If someone I know tells me "You've gotta see ___________ it's one of the funniest movies ever!" That'll excite me and I'll probably go see it. If someone tells me "You've gotta see _________ it really made me think...

    TV Pilot Question?

I've been interested in television for a while too. Based on what I've read from people who are in the business, the best approach is to first get hired as a television writer or more likely, a writers assistant, for another show. You do this by speccing scripts for shows that are on the air...

Red State: new Kevin Smith movie

Westboro* for those who want to look it up. (Sorry to be that guy) And I agree, the plot is intriguing. If you like movies of that nature you should definitely see Life of Brian and The Invention of Lying. Both films do a great job of cinematically parodying religion.

Red State: new Kevin Smith movie

He's a very over-rated director, in my opinion. Both Clerks films and Kay & Silent Bob Strike Bob were failures as far as comedies go. Dogma had an interesting premise and a lot of potential but was executed horribly. I feel that people in the indie community think that Kevin Smith is a...

My feature film got greenlit for $5 million by an investment firm. What do I do now?

Coming from a family full of businessmen and financiers, nothing about this makes sense. I have a lot of uncles and cousins in the financial sector and take a great interest in international finance myself, in addition to working at family businesses since I graduated high school. This doesn't...

Making indie films as a career?

Yea and three of the four actors were the creators. So that saves money as well. I was more commenting on how cheap a pilot was made for that was good enough to shop around and get picked up. But yea theres no doubt those connections helped.

Making indie films as a career?

The creators of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia shot their pilot for under $1,000 and they shopped the DVD around town and it garnered a good deal of attention. They're in their 7th season now and just got renewed for seasons 8 and 9.

    film-school FILM SCHOOL

I'm in my third semester at The Academy of Art in San Francisco. So far I've really enjoyed it and learned A LOT. The biggest advantage is the staff and their experience and insight that you can't get from any textbook. One of my current professors, Ian Corson, has directed a feature film...

story Writing a story in real time.

I feel ilk the real time format can really help plot twists. If the characters find out, in real time, that something drastic has happened and now they have to change their direction, the audience experiences it with them, in real time. The audience knows exactly how the characters reacted and...

story Writing a story in real time.

Yea but this would be about 60% longer. Also 24 has a seasonal arc (I think) where each episode carries on a premise and story already established earlier. With a movie, however, you would need to introduce the premise in real time and solve the conflict in real time.
