What are you currently working on....?

I’m in post on a short I shot for absurdly cheap. I’m going back to work with my editor on the second cut this week. There’s still a lot of work ahead. It’s just a festival piece, but most of the work I’ve done in the past has been work for hire, so I’m looking forward to experiencing the...

    Techie editing question.

Do you know if any of the major editing platforms (Avid, FCP, Premiere) have multi-user or server based versions of the program? For instance, can a user log onto a mainframe or server on a remote terminal and run the program on the server, where the terminal doesn’t actually house the program...

    Someone Specifiy Please

There are many different types of producers and some variation of producer is usually giveaway titles for ingratiating investors, and they don’t actually do any work besides give away their money. However a true working producer oversees all aspects of production from conception to...

    Production Work Book?

No, not crazy. I was just wondering. The closest thing I can think of that outlines the production process is Feature Film Making at Used Car Prices by Rick Schmidt, ISBN 0 14 02.4560 X. It’s a good place to start. For more information on concepts and techniques, I like The Filmmaker’s...

    New to apple.

I’m a PC guy, but I think it’s important to learn FCP and some other programs which aren’t supported on the PC platform. But I don’t know didilly swat about apple. So I have a few questions, and your advice would be appreciated. First let me say that I really only want a laptop. I can get an...

    sound Sound

It’s called a DAT deck. If you use any external sound recorder, you’ll need someone dedicated to recording sound and also a boom operator to hold the mike. When shooting, you’ll need to slate every shot so that you can match the timing. After it’s shot, you’ll have to import the sound files...

cast? crew? how bad is... too bad?

You get what you pay for. Depending on the project I will fill the key positions and scrape as much money as I can for them, and get volunteers for assistants and pa’s. It’s amazing the difference a little bit of money compared to no money gets you. Most importantly, whether you’re paying...

    Distribution... giving and receiving...

I think Madstone is the only chain that is trying to get a large dv distribution base. They create their own movies and also have a growing chain of theatres. I look forward to the day that the super hi fi video projectors that Sony has is picked up. I saw a demonstration of these a few years...

    realistic hanging

That’s a great idea. Or, you could have the actor hanging from his arms off camera and that way he can jerk and move his legs realistically. Also, you can have a cutaway CU of this face makeup blue with a fake noose but his feet will be on the ground. I hope that makes sense. I think the...

copyright fear of sharing ideas. w/o copyright

Well, you're mostly right hereticblue. According to the US Copyright website (http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html), "The way in which copyright protection is secured is frequently misunderstood. No publication or registration or other action in the Copyright Office is required to secure...

copyright fear of sharing ideas. w/o copyright

Something to think about. According to US Copyright law, anything created in “fixed format” which means printed onto paper is covered under law even if it is not registered with the Library of Congress. So, if you have an “idea” that you want to collaborate on, write a short treatment covering...

    Street Permit

If you require insurance, instead of getting a policy for an entire year, you can ride on ours. There are some requirements I can discuss in detail with you, and we require the contract to be signed a minimum of 2 weeks prior to shoot date to process paperwork and stuff, but it will be...

    Submitting to Competitions

Submit it to as many as you want. There is no conflict. Maybe it’ll win multiple awards. They usually won’t take scripts that have been produced, but if they won’t accept scripts that have been submitted to other competitions, I would be VERY warry.

    Submitting to Competitions

I thought they wanted unproduced scripts, not unsubmitted. I think you’d have to ask each competition if they will accept multiple scripts. Or, read the official rules, and if there is no provision against multiple submissions, then it shouldn’t be a problem.

    The "Short Shot"

Use MONTOGE: __ with a series of shot descriptions separated by commas. Do NOT use camera direction of CU, Close Up, Dolly or anything else. This will just piss off a producer who knows what s/he is doing. I’m a developmental producer and I see amateur writers with camera directions in them...
