Removing frames as suggested by the first comment will slow your footage down. If you have After Effects you can use the built in plug in Time Warp. Also it is much easy to do the slow down effect when filming then in post.

If budget isn't an issue why not go with the T4i? It is the newer version of the T3i and uses the same lenses. The kit lens that you can get with the T3i/T4i is an 18-55mm lens. Which would be good for getting started.

You edit your shots into a film in Premiere, Avid, or Final Cut Pro. You edit your film or clips to add visual effects or color grading in After Effects. Da Vinci is another color grading software that people use in place or with After Effects because it is suppose to give you more control...

Da Vinci Resolve doesn't work with my Macbook Pro. It will not work with the 13 inch screens sadly. This is no bueno.:lol:

Free hand is always going to be shaky that is why it is suggested to shoot on a tripod. Try putting your camera on one and shooting something. If there are still problems then it might be the camera.

By all means keep trying. I think the effect you are looking for with the rain would be better from a rain hose. Fake rain looks just like that fake. Because there are no drops hitting your subject the water isn't running down him etc. Some things can be done in visual effects and others...

The After Effects Rain Kinda ruined the trailer for me. It isn't realistic enough especially if the whole concept is built around the rain. The voice over work was good as was the music.

You can do color grading in After Effects with and without plugins. I currently use the free version of Colorista from Red Giant. The newer version has some better features but I haven't gotten around to purchasing it. Sony Vegas to my knowledge is just a editor like Windows Movie Maker...
