cinematography Does my new DP have a good way of doing night shooting?

Doing any kind of day-for-night shoots always looks fake, unless you have people working on this that have a lot of experience with creating it. A good day-for-night effect won't happen by just shooting during the day and then working on it in post. Let's take your woods example; you can't see...

If full HD looks like 60fps, then why not just shoot 60fps?

It's not in 60FPS. HDtvs have some kind of function that smoothes the image. Personally, I hate it and I turn it off. Each company has a similar function but name it with some bombastic title. Search your TV settings for something along the lines of "TruHD" or "Pixle Perfect Motion".

    cinematography Shoot 60fps on a 25fps project?

Thanks everyone, there's no typo, I'll try to explain myself better: Here's the trick - If I want to shoot slow motion on PAL settings, I would get 50FPS. If I want to shoot slow motion on NTSC, I would get 60FPS. Now, my project should eventually be in PAL. However, instead of shooting the...

    cinematography Shoot 60fps on a 25fps project?

Hi, If I shoot something on 720p 60FPS (This is NTSC) and edit it on a 25FPS timeline (This is PAL), instead of a 30FPS timeline, wouldn't I gain a few more frames for slow motion use? (Shot on Canon 5D Mark III) Since PAL slomo is 50FPS, that would give me 50% slomo on a 25FPS timeline. And...

Advice on acheiving slo-mo falling scenes (example inside)

A few tips: 1. You will need a lot of lighting for 300FPS. The higher you go, the more light you need, if you don't want to crank up that ISO. 2. A good way to make her fall would depend on what backdrop you want. If you are doing this on a monochrome background for keying in post, then...

cinematography Shaky Camera Work / Single Color Hue in films

Is this for the greenscreen as well? If so, weren't the lights in the garbage mask area?

cinematography Shaky Camera Work / Single Color Hue in films

Proper handling of shoulder cameras is the best way to achieve shaky video footage. If you want anything that will look organic in post, then you need to do it right - most people add some sort of Wiggler to position keyframes in After Effects and think that's good enough. It works well for...

cinematography Shaky Camera Work / Single Color Hue in films

Good luck with your first film. As for learning technical terms and how to properly use them; there simply is too much to just spit it all out. Eventually, if you keep at it, you learn. I believe that even the most skillful people learn new things at their own craft with time. You can begin to...

cinematography Shaky Camera Work / Single Color Hue in films

It's usually a shoulder-cam. Meaning the camera is resting on the cinematographer's shoulder. Some cameras (Such as DSLRS) can't actually sit on your shoulder, so you need to attach a shoulder-mount to the camera. There are many types of mounts for the different types of cameras. You need to...

editing Any ideas on finding quiet place to record post audio?

A cheap way to do it. Go to a graveyard and take a few gripstands and some winter blankets. Put up those blankets in a square to block the wind. It sounds odd, but a graveyard is a good place for recording sound.

    editing best colorization software?

You need to export an EDL from Preimere Pro, import it into Davinci and then export back the EDL. I think this can work with an XML as well, not sure though. The problem with Davinci is that it's notorious for its compatibility. You will need to make sure your formats properly support Davinci.

Do my friends have TOO much confidence in their project?

Have they ever made a film before? Because from what you are saying, squeezing a production with fighting sequences, costumes and whole lot of galore is not easy to properly make. What your friends are doing is jumping into the cold water. They will learn a lot from this experience, but I doubt...

How to get down to green screen?

Very true, this becomes even a bigger problem when doing full-body greenscreen. Since you need characters to cast shadows on the ground and use them in post. However, skillful keyers can work well even with chromakeys that aren't 100% properly lit.

    editing VFX shot advice

The technique is the same, however, the tracking becomes more complicated. Especially because a human hand isn't stable. This might involve some frame-by-frame tweaking if the track isn't perfect. You can still use a photograph and turn it into a 3D object, just make sure to add lights in your...

How to get down to green screen?

Adding to what people say here, it's also important which camera you are using. The cheaper cameras will usually create artifacts around the edges of your subject. This will be especially problematic between hair and other very thin subjects.
