I just heard this as well and I can't say I'm surprised but it just continues to confirm my opinion on the event.

because people are more likely to go see a movie if there's an actor they know in it? its just smart to use actors that are almost guaranteed to make the movie a profit. I wouldn't even say that Rami Malek is an exception, he's still a very well known actor.
