I'm looking for a Producer or Exec Producer for UK indie Sci-fi feature.

Check you're eligible for the Producers Tax Credit - you still have to pass the 'cultural test' - my horror movie didn't make the cut (it's set in the US) - if your sci-fi movie isn't set in the UK I suspect yours won't either...

    iPhone/iPad filmmaking apps...

Hi everyone! Making this thread to recommend some iPhone/iPad apps I've been using and to hear what recommendations you people have - some of these apps are killer! My faves: Artemis Directors Viewfinder - iPhone Very cool app - allows you to select a camera body and set of prime lenses then...

    NEED CAMERA ADVICE!! $2500 budget

I've just ordered a Sony NEX VG10 - not sure when they're actually shipping though - looks like a good package for $2000/£2000 - comes with a decent 18mm-200mm zoom too. Only downsides are locked frame rates (25p EU/30p US), no pro audio connections (not that I plan on recording audio to the...

    Lights...Where Do I Start?

I've used videogear.co.uk and been very happy with their service. From my experience I'd say don't start out with RedHeads - if you're doing interior shoots in small locations you won't be able to use a typical set of three 500w effectively. In retrospect, for my first shoot we should have got a...

    5 years then it's all 3D?

I really hope 3D dies a quick death - it's just another excuse to spend more on the FX than the story :(

    If you doubt DSLR?

I did - so far this press release (on the 10th) is the only official word on pricing. Note the 'tentatively' - 3 days later the Japan price of $10,000 was announced - no further pricing info has been revealed (aside from those Tweets) - all I'm saying is that Panasonic worded their press...

    If you doubt DSLR?

Panasonic haven't officially announced the pricing for it in the US and EU yet - all we know is that in Japan it's $10,000 - can't imagine they'd sell it for half the price in the US/EU.

I'm having trouble writing my script

Each to their own :) I found the Syd Field books very helpful - my screenwriting improved dramatically (IMHO) as a consequence. I agree about Blake Synder though - his view of screenwriting is that you're wasting your time if it isn't commercial (for those who haven't read 'Save the Cat'...

    lighting Lighting Comparison

Remember that you don't necessarily have to point your lights at your subject - you can bounce them off walls, ceilings etc. to get some interesting lighting setups. Reflectors come in handy for manipulating light too.

I'm having trouble writing my script

I wrote my first script this way - it took 5 years (no joke!) Get a good screenwriting book (I like Syd Fields' stuff - Blake Synder depresses me) - the stuff you'll learn will help the process no end (my second script took 6 months - that's a 1000% improvement :))

    Presale

My personal take on this is, unless the film you're working on is 'the one' (i.e. the unique exciting project that you can die happy once you've made it) then take a deal that covers all your costs for making the movie and gives you a decent chunk of change for kickstarting the next project...

editing archiving uncompressed HD to Blu ray dvds

If you're determined to go the Blu-Ray route, does your drive support Dual-Layer disks? These hold up to 50GB. My preferred approach is to use an external hard disk enclosure that supports removable drives - then you can just buy the drives themselves without having to buy a new external drive...

lighting How would you create lightning?

The problem I see with this is that the set is going to be (dimly) lit by a number of wall lamps that will be in shot during the lightning flashes - ramping up the highlights will intensify these lamps too which is the opposite of what I want - I'd like them to dim during the lightning flashes...

lighting How would you create lightning?

Thanks for the great ideas everyone! David: I probably could've worded it better - the storm's going on outside - the scene is INT :) We're shooting with a Sony NEX VG10 - it's a APS-C CMOS DSLR-type thing - I'm leaning towards the idea of getting a welder in - think this may get me the look...

Might be worth us meeting up for a drink - I'm working on something similar (it's a feature though) - maybe we can help each other out :) Survivor Films Ltd.

    5 page script for funding

Damn! That's a GREAT idea! Makes for a terrific logline too! Now I gotta get it out of my head 'cause I've got my own scripts to work on :D Good luck with it!

    If you doubt DSLR?

Well, in fairness that's exactly what Sony and Panasonic (with the AG-AF100) are doing. The Panasonic was looking good 'til the price went up from $6,000 to $10,000 - at $10k I expect it to come with a better codec than AVCHD. It's a better camera than the Sony but is it 5 times better? Not to...

lighting How would you create lightning?

Yeah - I thought about that but I wasn't sure I'd get the intensity I'm after - also I'm concerned it'd look like something moving past a light (depends on how fast the Grip can move it I guess) - it's worth trying out before I spend any money though :)

editing archiving uncompressed HD to Blu ray dvds

You're much better off getting a few external hard disks 'cause a) per gigabyte of space they're far cheaper than Blu-Rays, b) Blu-Ray really doesn't hold that much data and c) Blu-Rays scratch. Seriously - don't do it! Hard disks are cheap so get a couple and back it up twice.
