From one rookie looking for advice

Have you looked to see if anyone else has done something similar? Chances are they probably have. Focus groups aren't very helpful unless you've got a big budget, frankly I wouldn't waste money on them. You could always try a kickstarter if you have a realistic budget plan in mind and some...

favorite What is your favorite genre? Why?

Not really sure what you mean by "Faith/Spirituality" genre, but it doesn't sound like something I'd be inclined to try and tap into if I didn't believe in what I was shooting or otherwise have a very deep understanding of. It sounds to me like the sort of thing that could easily blow up in your...

favorite What is your favorite genre? Why?

Funnily I feel the same way about comedy as you do about horror. The vast majority of directors don't seem to be capable of growing beyond the incredibly trite "lol let's make unfunny jokes about how awkward romantic relationships can be and maybe we'll throw in a love triangle and clash with...

Getting ready for sex scenes without nudity

Merkins are the historical prop of choice for shooting sex scenes and covering up naughty bits. Watch the sex scene in Underworld for a good example of what not to do.

At what point do you need permits?

Nah, NYC and LA would be a bit too much. Right now the areas I'm looking at are various ocean-side cities in Oregon. I doubt I'll be able to narrow down specific locations until after the kickstarter's launched simply due to the nature of what I'm wanting to shoot.

At what point do you need permits?

I was hoping for an answer that didn't involve calling people. (I hate using the phone.) :P But at least that narrows things down a bit.

At what point do you need permits?

Okay, so this has been in the back of my mind for awhile now but I've ran into a bit of a brick wall in my knowledge. Short of actually talking to a lawyer for specific advice I was hoping to get some general guideline from what people have experience dealing with themselves. I've got an idea...

    Why there are jerks?

If you're shooting with just your hands there will be jerks. It's practically guaranteed.

    Why there are jerks?

Get a tripod and/or steadicam equivalent.

    > The Budget Thread

Here I was beginning to worry that my production budget for a "short" $25,000 project was too elaborate.

editing Freezing certain parts of the shot

A green screen would probably be the easiest way to do it. Then just edit the rest in post with your preferred video editor.

Compromising vision to get it made?

Have you done budget projections on how much your vision would cost? If you ignore all of the technical and creative aspects eventually everything boils down to two things; cold hard cash and time. Lay out a plan and figure out how much it would cost to achieve your vision without compromise...

    Where/how to start.....

    1. Learn what settings you need for shooting things you're most likely to encounter. 2. Find something interesting and start shooting. 3. Experiment. 4. Buy new lenses and equipment as the need arises. Don't get something because you think you might need it someday.

How to get down to green screen?

Having good lighting is also an important consideration. If the light isn't consistent or placed properly you could have too many color shades and completely screw up the keying in your software.

How to get down to green screen?

Premiere Elements has a chroma key feature that's incredibly simple to use.

Does general liability cover independent contractors?

Ask your lawyer. Declaring all of your contractors employees might be a great way of running afoul of employment laws where you're filming if you aren't in compliance with all the other regulations.

    Video Shielding

What kind of magnets are we talking about? Depending on how powerful they are I wouldn't spend too much time fretting over it. Second, how close do you actually need the camera to be? If you don't have to be rubbing it up against the magnets then it's probably going to be fine. If you really...
