Is it unprofessional to do an online casting call?

It's done all the time now, professional and indies a like. Its just cheaper to get an actor to send in an online audition (or live video audition) than rent a place and hold a a formal casting session at a fix time to weed out for the initial short-list.

    Slow motion in music video

First and foremost - Yellow - he was singing faster than normal so when it was slowed down his mouth matched the song. The music you hear is recorded separately and placed on the video, what you are hearing is not what he sounded on the beach. Second - Normal 'Slow Motion' in music video The...

Tripod for camera jib - Please help or I die!

I will say one thing, best to get one with a speader bar (connects all three legs together) or you will have issues using the jib where 1 leg will adjust its position as you move the jib side to side which can cause leg-creep closer or farther away from the center axis.

Matte box negates separate ND filter?

    Internal ND filterwheel = priceless!

Field monitor output looks better than secondary external monitors - what's truer?

I have the AC7, its crushing your 1080p signal to 720p, it does it in a way that generally looks good; how I don't know but you are down-rezing the image so it tends to look 'better'. If its a colour issue the AC7 has 10 profiles you can pick from, but there is a catch - you need to set them up...

Are their any good color filters for DSLR lenses?

Honestly... although ChimpPhobiaFilms doesn't say it unless your really doing some serious deep colour filters (beside ND & Polarizers) doing it in post is the less complicated method of adding some colour tint to your film. "Says the guy who just graded to shoots on two different cameras that...

    Shotgun/boom mic for under 200?

My solution... Pearstone OLM-10 Wired Mic connected to a Zoom H1 on the subject (yes the audio is a bit boomy but you can drop that in post pretty easily). Cost - $20LAV + $100Recorder Tada problem solved with $80 to spare, and if you have pluraleyes 3 to sync the sound to the camera, your...

Is This A Good Deal For A Editing Laptop?

The more power the better for editing, if your running in 1080p then make sure the monitor specs match that and likely look at a 3rd or 4th gen i7 chip computer. Your also going to need either a HHD or Hybrid drive (SSD are too small unless you want to spend more than the computer itself to have...

Free Pluraleyes with Rode VideoMic Pro or Stereo VideoMic Pro

I agree 100% and when I got the Stereo Pro mic the last time they had this promo, I never used the software with the mic, rather used it with my NTG-2 and H4n to sync to the Camera recorded audio from the Stereo Pro mic. Not sure why they are doing it this way... I'm sure they have a reason.

    Projects

Starting on my first feature "Nook" that I will be shooting in parts over the next few months. I've been helping out on three other features (learning the ropes, seeing what to do and what not to do, etc). Got a few short films to wrap up in post as well, may even send 1 or 2 to a film festival.

Trolling (in a good way) the Forum Again

Hey everyone, Its been a while (I've been busy filming) and due to recent upgrades and slight change in focus (away from short films to monetizable projects) I'll be starting my first Feature "Nook" so I'll likely be on the forum more asking questions (and if possible again answer some). Hope...

    Alternative to Davinci resolve?

I tend to use MagicBullet's Looks/Colourista II/Mojo most of the time as they are easy to use, and I can quickly get the look I want pretty quick (not crazy huge pushes). I also have Adobe SpeedGrade (Haven't tried it) and Davinci but they are mostly unused as the process is more complicate and...

Torn between the Blake magic cinema and pocket cam

Look at the Metabones "Speedbooster" adapter for MFT, slap that on the BMPC and your good to go with your EF glass (in theory - I haven't tried it yet) and it gets you close to Full Frame (I think you land between Canon Crop and Full Frame).

    Zoom H6

Really wish I could also use the recorder as an XLR pre-amp pass through (so it records the audio but also passes XLR signal with pre-amp to the camera) as that would be best of both worlds. Given its $400 that's a good price compared to the H4n Zoom (although it does not include the stereo...

    Gear necessary for indie filmmaker

Camera - So many Options its not funny. Lighting - At least 1 light, the more the better but you should have at least one (a lot of our stuff we get by using 1-2 portable LED lights and shifting available light around). Sound - Alcove Audio has the best advice, if you want to stay low I'd...

Locations - how to get on low budget?

Rayw is 100% right, if your story includes elements you can not put into your movie due to budget limitations, it basically useless to you as an indie filmmaker. Write what you can shoot with the resources you have/can get.

    film-school Vacation Destination: Film Schools?

I have some vacation time and it was suggested to me to go get some training in a film school (Director/DOP) as a self improvement step. I'm wonder if people can recommend or point me to legit film schools that hold meaningful 1-4 week courses. I know of REDucation and Finding Life Film School...

What a good XLR preamp for mica when recording sound in camera?

Thinking of getting a FS100/700 with XLR inputs, but I'm not sure how good the pre-amp in-camera is, so I'm looking at a dedicated XLR pass through pre-amp suggestions. For reference: I'm coming from a GH2 with rode stereo mic pro Also have a H4N Zoom with NTG-2 mic, but I'm thinking of...

Cheapest EVF you can buy (for HDMI)

Bill is correct, I already have an excellent 7" field monitor. Specifically looking for a basic EVF for run&gun framing (will likely be relying on camera's autofocus for focus).
