Canon 5D MkIII video lag issue

Some google searches show that a lot of other people with MkIII's have the same issue. Argh. Wonder if it's a firmware thing...

Canon 5D MkIII video lag issue

I just noticed this today while experimenting around: The video on the LCD is between a quarter of a second and a half a second behind. This could wind up being extremely problematic for scenes where camera movement timing is crucial. The lag is the same whether it's on the camera's LCD or on a...

    Pros/Cons

With youtube and the like now supporting HD, older SD videos aren't looking so good in comparison.

    Pros/Cons

The only "pro" of shooting SD I can think of is you'll be dealing with smaller video files. Other than that, there is absolutely no reason to shoot in standard definition.

    Canon 4K DSLR?

The DSLRs do far better than the Scarlet in low light, so there's that...

    Which Canon?

A thousand times, this. And as I've said many times in the past, it's the lenses that are going to make the biggest difference in image quality, not the camera body. If you're just starting out, going with a cheaper camera + expensive glass is far better than using an expensive camera + cheap...

How did I miss this? Iron Sky

It sucked because instead of living up to the fantastical promise of the premise, they just went and pandered to the lowest common denominator. The resulting effect was "meh". The movie would have been far better (and potentially funnier) had they just played it straight.

archived-videos Footage test for virtual set Film-Noir/Comedy

I'd also recommend denoising/descratching the old footage, and then after comping in your actors apply a grain/scratch layer over the comp. That should help sell the illusion if it being made from a single shot. Grain mismatch will immediately scream out "fake!".

archived-videos Footage test for virtual set Film-Noir/Comedy

There's something off about the comp... I can't tell if it's just the lighting or if there's gamma issues, but something is definitely off.

Closer to Creating Life in the Laboratory

Gravity exists and we have a theory of how it behaves. Evolution exists and we have a theory of how it behaves. I once hooked up asexually-reproducing feed-forward neural network brains to run single-celled organisms that ran around in a simple simulated world (2D, randomly-appearing plant...

editing video playback a bit jumpy

Hrm. Check to see if HP installed a bunch of crap you don't need (things that launch on startup). It might be other processes draining your system's resources. (I've cut HD video on an old G4 that was 10 years old -- your system's specs should be pretty sufficient.)

Closer to Creating Life in the Laboratory

Hah! I wish I could get paid for that, but it's only a hobby. My day job involves writing c# code to process billing files, most of which appear to be designed by drunken leprechauns having a real bad day.

cinematography Why does 24fps look choppy?

User a longer lens to get the jello effect. The image has to be moving across the sensor very quickly to be noticeable, and that's easier when using a telephoto.

    F/G and B/G focus

You need to shoot with a smaller aperture (larger f-stop number). A wide-open aperture lets in a lot of light, but also gives you a very shallow depth-of-field. Stopping the aperture down will let you keep more of the scene in focus. You also might want to consider shooting at a wider angle, as...

    editing Color Crush.

Possibility 1: Due to the nature of 8-bit footage and the noise inherent in the blue channel (blue is the noisiest), you're running into clipping/grain that is only noticeable when you push up the blues. Run NeatVideo on your footage before grading to smooth that out. Possibility 2: Early steps...

editing video playback a bit jumpy

Elements is an extremely stripped-down program, so CS6 is FAR more suitable. (I use CS5.5 but will be upgrading in a month or so.) If Adobe is too expensive for you, you might want to give Sony Vegas a try as I know a lot of people around here swear by it, and it's much less expensive. But you...

editing video playback a bit jumpy

I just looked up the specs for that laptop, and from what I can tell it should be able to edit h.264 in Premiere CS5 or greater w/out being jumpy. The culprit here might actually be Elements. Rent Premiere CS6 from Adobe (cheap, you don't need to buy the whole thing outright) to see if it works...

    HVX200 vs HVX200A / HPX170

sigh Yes. I have. Which means if I either delay my feature or just fail to get into production like I've been doing for so long, I'm going to have to budget in an HDMI recorder system and possibly a bigger project drive. :( Good thing I took that software job and have nearly zero financial...

Scifi armor creation help if possible.

There are plenty of Halo Armor tutorials, the same techniques which could be used to make just about any sort of outfit. Personally, I find the whole skin-tight catsuit approach to be silly. If you want to really sell a look, remember that form follows function. If you go with form for the sake...
