    Filmmaking books

To be honest I thought they would be lame because I hadn't heard of most of the people. I ended up loving almost everyone. The Best Scott Rosenberg Stuart Beatty Paul Haggis Jonathan Hensleigh Ted Griffen Simon Kinsburg Sheldon Turner Bruce Joel Rubin Jeff Nathanson

    Filmmaking books

Since you have netflix, I highly suggest renting, The Dialogue: interviews with screenwriters. Unbelievably good interviews with working industry professionals. Great insight can be gained from these writers, a lot have experience with directing, producing, etc.

    Psuedonym

How do you go about using one? I have always been curious, as far as pay, copywriting, registering, etc. I think that if you did eventually "make it", it would be a nice convenience to be able to separate professional from personal lives.

    Opening.

Lethal weapon was his first sale, I believe. So there was no "Shane Black, the action writer" before that. It was a simple spec, written by a 22 year old wordsmith. When I say flowery, I don't mean overly wordy. I mean that its very literary in the way its written. The reason I used that as...

    Opening.

I agree with what the others has said, except for this last part above. I agree with it to a point but not totally. There is place, in my opinion, for the flowery writing in the descriptions. Just look at Shane Black, thats what he is known for. His work can be argued as a great piece of...

    Olympics Luge?

Its absolutely awful that a 21 year old DIED today and people just want to watch the video . Its a terrible way to start the Olympics

    HORROR WITHOUT GHOSTS

I am not entirely positive as to what your asking also. You want a story that plays like a ghost story but in the end the explanation is not a ghost story, but a rational answer. That sounds like a tall order. In order for horror to be effective, it has to be believed, otherwise its just...

Getting REAL laugh tracks... for cheap?

You could do it oldschool. Get two tape recorders record you and some others laughing into it. Play that back, and laugh with it, again recording, but this time with recorder #2. Do this a few times and it will sound like an audience. Its not the same thing, but its fun, free, and you do...

    Having trouble with dream sequences

Do you have to note that its a dream sequence? I had one in a recent feature, I didn't say it was a dream sequence in the slugline, but I had Him waking up in bed. Should I put it in the slug line even though it should be appearant that its a dream? Sorry to hijack the thread.

    Aspiring screenwriter turned aspiring director.

Great advise, I appreciate it. For now I would just plan on directing and leave the tech stuff to those who know what they are doing. I want to learn that, but a first time director/dp/cinematographer would probably be disastrous. I do intend to learn as much as possible though. I ordered...

INT. BATHROOM -- DAY or INT. BATHROOM or BATHROOM I like to read streamlined screenplays, so I like as few words as possible.

    Having problem with flashback sequence

Not an expert, but I would do it like this. INT. CAFETERIA -- DAY (FEB 2010) BLAH BLAH BLAH INT. CAFETERIA -- DAY (AUG 2009) BLAH BLAH BLAH BACK TO PRESENT: I can't make this look the way I want it to, but the BACK TO PRESENT, I would use as a transition. I'm not sure if thats correct but...

    SCREENWRITERS RESOURCES

I think that S2S is pretty new, on a previous SU podcast, they said it was created by the same guy. I assume its legit, as screenwriters utopia is. I wouldn't say its effective, but if you have an extra 25 bones, that you don't mind throwing away, than nothing is lost. I'm not familiar with...

    slo motion in scripts.

I'm not sure if its allowed to post portions of scripts, I would assume its fine as long as I give it credit and make no claims to own it. THIS IS AN EXCERPT FROM THE MOTION PICTURE SCREENPLAY FOR THE FILM "THE MATRIX" BY LARRY AND ANDY WACHOWSKI INT. SUBWAY STATION - DAY 178 Neo whip-draws...

Drag your Protagonist through the mud...

Actually he is in the army because he was drafted. Its the vietnam era, he isn't the military type, and frankly is a fish out of water. Now this isn't a military screenplay, thats just the catalyst that brings him to Germany. The story is man vs. supernatural. He is put in a situation...

    Aspiring screenwriter turned aspiring director.

My goals/desires in the film industry have mainly been focused on screenwriting. I have invested a lot of time and money into developing the craft of screenwriting. Directing is something I have viewed as a romantic endeavor. I love the idea of bringing a world to life through a camera, but...

    action action

If it a scene with no dialogue, then there is no other way around it. But be as to the point as possible with the descriptions. If it is too long and drawn out it may not be read. The eye naturally starts to wander. I try to keep everything at a 4 line max per segment. Like 2001 said...

Drag your Protagonist through the mud...

I realize that It has been a long time since the last post and I apologize. I have a question. I have completed a supernatural thriller set on an American Army base in vietnam era Germany. My main character is the youngest of two kids, his role in the family is the young kid who doesn't know...
