I'm almost halfway through my shots. Unfortunately things are going to be put on hold for about two weeks as my wife and I move out of our apartment and into a house. Good thing I don't need to do any reshoots at the apartment! In any case, I'm looking forward to having a few acres and a new...

    editing Car window footage

I always shoot mine myself. I currently have a pickup truck that makes it easy, but I've also used a friend's hatchback in the past. The nice thing about shooting it yourself is that you can control stops and turns to match with the green screen footage of your actor.

Working on my most difficult shot yet. There's an earthquake scene that we shot practically as much as possible in the middle of a street. For VFX, I wanted to make some transformers explode on power poles, as well as add a huge crack in the asphalt. There's been a few challenges. First...

Cool part is that you can try it out for free with Nuke Non-Commercial. It's a free version for learning and doing tutorials. If you decide it's for you, Nuke Indie is actually pretty affordable at $500 a year. You'll also want to use the Nuke X version. Regular Nuke is basically like Natron...

movies How to Sell my Shorts and Features on My Site per Download?

One thing to consider, people today can be gun shy about purchasing from a private party website unless that company is known and established. I understand wanting to keep as much control over the sales process as possible (and the profits), but I wonder if you wouldn't actually make more money...

It's days like this where I'm so happy I chose Nuke as my compositor. A while back, way before I started shooting, I mentioned on here about needing some prop newspapers. Due to budget constraints, I wasn't able to get any made. Instead, I bought a local newspaper for one dollar and used it...

    tech-help Gotta fix it

Glad you got it fixed! I feel your pain. I built my computer back in May, bought one of the biggest coolers I could find (Noctua D15) and I still get overheating when rendering at maximum speed in Resolve. I have to render at 50% speed in order to prevent it from overheating.

Nate's Guide to Self Help Books that will Actually Help you Help Yourself

Awesome! I enjoy the convince of having a camera, GPS, calling and text on one device, as well as some apps I use in my film and video work, but that's about it. I don't have games or anything fun on my phone. It's about as close to a dumb phone as I can get while still having a great camera...

Nate's Guide to Self Help Books that will Actually Help you Help Yourself

I was going to mention this one! Another one I really like is "The 4-Hour Work Week" by Tim Ferris. At the core, it's about lifestyle design. Some of the info isn't so great, but there's a lot of really good nuggets in it. One of my favorites is the idea to only check email at one or two...

    blog Leap

Ended up needing to add another step to my VFX workflow. My beast of a computer doesn't like playing back the rendered .exr files from Nuke, so now I'm converting all VFX finals to h.264 and added another track to my timeline where I place these renders. They're only for playback. On the...

I let them have it. It was for my older, unofficial company anyway, but it's a name I still use at times for certain projects.

business Just lost my film company domain url name

I had the same issue. I was using domain.com and never got a notice or anything like that. One day I noticed my email wasn't working, so I logged in to my account and found the domain was gone. Called customer service and they informed me that it had lapsed and been bought up by another...

Anyone else here use Blender for adding CG to their films? I've been using Blender since 2001, back when the interface was horrible. Anyway, in 2013 I was supervising a four part documentary series and I watched Sean Kennedy's presentation about his use of Blender in Hollywood films. I...

Still alive and chipping away at shots. If it's things like a simple remove, I'm getting five or so shots done a day. Others, like adding the Northern Lights to a day for night shot are taking a little longer. At least I'm getting more green on my VFX list :)

vfx My first Digi-Double (with breakdown)

I agree, that would the ultimate way to use a digital double. Unfortunately, I'm not enough of an animator to help align the CG to the real, so I'm stuck with Mixamo and using CG for the entire length of a shot for now. I remember in the early 2000's that I used to play with a free app...

directing The Nuts and Bolts of Filmmaking

I have mad respect for people that do any form of animation. I made a 30 minute brick film on VHS when I was in 8th grade and while it was fun, when I finished I told myself never again. I do a little CG animation now and then for my live action films, but it's almost always objects like...

misc Can a filmmaker with the right passion make films with virtually no budget?

There's a built in audience until you deviate from the status quo. I got lucky, but will probably encounter more backlash moving forward. The Christians that believe like the new film presents typically don't like movies, and they don't like alcohol and language, so I may be shooting myself in...

misc Can a filmmaker with the right passion make films with virtually no budget?

Yep. Did a movie in 2010 for $2000 that has 1.8 million views on YouTube and has made over $10K through ad revenue. Shot another this summer that while it did have $15,000 worth of gear I bough over the last 13 years, production budget was again only about $2000. Write the story that you...
