    archived-videos Trailer for "Vault"

This is a fun little project I've been working on. It's perhaps not a great example of cinematic achievement, but it's still worth spending a minute to watch the trailer for. There were just two of us working on the filming. We wrote and filmed everything in a week, and then have been...

    Real Time Rendering w/Lucas Film

Hasn't this stuff been around for a while? For most movies, real time rendering won't work simply because computers aren't powerful enough. For gaming, we've already got some pretty boss tech http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP48cLFeBms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YYiTkf3sDs

editing What NLE Do You Use?

Blender. If you can find anything more powerful that's free and runs on Windows, let me know. I've used it for short films and a music video.

    Extremely new guy with questions

To contrast with directorik, just go ahead and make your 30 minute movie and use every shot as a learning experience. It comes out to the same thing, except you don't have to invent 4-5 different stories. That's my recommendation, anyway. And don't spend much money until you have experience...

    archived-videos Cell Phone Monologue

Looks good. I think more variation in the camera angles and a few close ups would improve it. And it feels as though Miller himself doesn't know what he's talking about--it's too ambiguous, perhaps. With a minimal story, you could experiment with having the location tie more directly with the...

    editing Efficient Editing

I usually follow that suggestion and edit each scene, and then put those together. I usually add music, titles and credits, and anything else that's needed to help the flow in the last step. But it depends on the film length. If it's like a minute long you may as well edit everything in one project.

    VFX Fake Windows

My advice is to keep the camera still and then just composite images for the window and whatever's outside. If people walk in front of the window, use a green screen. If not, there's no need for the green and you won't have to worry about the color spill. If the camera has to move, make a 3D...

archived-videos First try at a short film.

It's good, especially for a first and considering you are all screenwriters. Though, the only truly "scary" scene was the shower scene, just because it was tediously long and you knew SOMEthing was going to happen. I am glad you stuck with making the point apprehension, instead of just shocking...

What makes a good film good?

To me, music is the single most important factor in a film's enjoyability. I compiled independent lists for my favorite films and my favorite film scores, and they were nearly the exact same lists. Second to music, I find originality important. I hate watching a films and being reminded often...

    archived-videos The Reader (Short Film)

Thanks so much for the input! 1. Yes, I see what you mean, though for the opening shots I felt that it was important to establish the world as dull, grey, and monotonous. 2. You think a voiceover in a movie entitled "The Reader" is a good idea? Sorry... couldn't help pointing out the irony...

    archived-videos The Reader (Short Film)

Hey everyone, I'm an amateur film maker and this is a latest short film I shot. It's obviously a small production: no budget, just 5 people and a camera. We spent more time writing and planning than anything else. The story is a bit unconventional, just to warn you. http://youtu.be/QcIe2HT-YiU...
