    editing Cross-dissolves or clean cuts?

What's the convention for editing within a scene, say, going from shot to reverse angle during conversation--a clean cut or a very very short cross dissolve? I tried to answer my question by turning on the tv and watching. The cuts SEEM like they have no overlap, but perhaps it's just 2 frames...

    lighting Lighting for Idiot(s)

Wow, thanks. I should be paying you. (Want to fly over to Montreal for April 7?) I think I've deciphered it all (and learned a lot in the process). Even if I don't have the technical resources to duplicate it exactly, it gives me something to work from. Did I read your profile right ... you...

Most of the short is in the bathroom. Here are a few situations: He'll walk into bathroom. (Medium shot from behind.) Then look in mirror and play with his face (close-up). Then he'll turn to his right and leave. In another part, he'll also be seated in the middle of the room while his...

The ceiling is beige ... so that might be better for bouncing. I'm trying to figure out how to post my sketch. At home I just have the usual stuff, a few lamps, flashlights. Check out the pdf of equipment: http://www.mainfilm.qc.ca/en/pdf/catalogue.may.2009.pdf I just became a member. I was...

    lighting Lighting for Idiot(s)

Lighting a bathroom scene I'm going to be shooting a few scenes in a fair-sized bathroom. At some points the actor will look in the mirror. The existing lighting consists of two fixtures about two metres apart roughly in the middle of the room. Each fixture has three lights (typical, screw-in...

So, I have this scene in my script...

Hearing the impact is probably more evocative than seeing it. Girl trips. Guys eyes widen as we hear Sound of impact. Girl lying on sand.

Thanks. That didn't occur to me about the shot of the books. I'll keep that in mind next time I'm setting up a similar shot.

FREE IDEA (the best movie ever)

Actually, this is a good idea. With all the creativity here. Everyone make a little clip of themselves (or someone else) raving about the unnamed great movie and send it to one person to edit together. That's a mockumentary I'd like to watch.

    archived-videos First doc

Last week I posted a music video I did. I actually did this doc first. It just went up today. I was a bit rushed because I noticed the contest rather late. I wish I hadn't had to use so many stills, but I didn't have enough footage to go with the narration I'd written...

Thanks, I checked out the thread last night. Very helpful. Covers all the angles (no pun intended).

    Rehearsing

That's helpful. Thanks. I just hope actors working for free (I mean, the love of the art) are wiling to meet a couple times before we shoot.

    Rehearsing

I know in the theatre world directors and cast rehearse for weeks, if not months before opening night. How much rehearsal usually get done before shooting a film? On set or off? Who else might be there, dop, etc. to help with their own preparations? Thanks for any insight as I prepare to make...

    On-camera release statement?

That's a good idea! Even if it's not legal, it would give me peace of mind. I doubt someone who's done that is going to turn around and demand to have his or her face removed from the video, or worse, sue you.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I knew there was no way I was going to make it look like anything other than a handheld, no lighting, no HD, no film indie thing so I tried to make the most of it, starting with somewhat interesting (but free) locations. Also tried to be resourceful. Did do...

polfilmblog, thanks for the thoughts. 1. I agree. 2. Okay. I only have Final Cut Express so minimal color correction options. Is it over saturated or under? 6. There's not really a band. There's a songwriting team and they "hired" the singer and me. Songwriters didn't want to be in vid. 7. I...

Thanks for looking at it! A lot of the flaws came from lack of confidence and lack of patience and nervousness. I think I needed to be a bit more of an active director. In the cafe the girl isn't quite expressing the right emotion. The cafe was open and we only spent $1.25. I didn't want to...

I just finished my first video. Made dozens of mistakes throughout the process and learned a ton. Would be interested to hear what you think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDlj0MPhvts Cheers, Tom
