    Production Diary: Music Video

Just finished up the "final" cut of the video. At this point, the only thing left to do is go over it with my co-producer and make any final changes. I'm pretty freaking happy with the way it's turned out. I can't wait to share it with everyone here. We'll definitely make our goal of finishing...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Got the last of our footage filmed last night and this morning. Lighting was an issue. I ended up having to use my old vintage Helios lens because the kit lens I'd been using just wasn't letting in enough light. I needed a static shot of a TV to composite in some footage for one small clip, and...

Extreme anxiety preventing me from starting on project?

I'm no stranger to anxiety. So what I've done to ease myself into filmmaking is start slow. My first short (well, technically it was my second, but my first real short was HORRIBLE), I did 100% on my own (cinematography, editing, acting, directing, etc.). It gave me a chance to complete a...

    Production Diary: Music Video

Thanks! The best part is that every step of the way, the guys in the band have told me I've exceeded their expectations. I keep joking that they must have had very low expectations. ;)

    Production Diary: Music Video

We were supposed to film the final part of the video tonight, but had to push it back a day. So tomorrow we'll film the final narrative parts, and hopefully then I can get it all edited this coming week. We're still waiting on the final master of the song to come back from the guy doing it...

    What's the plan?

About to head for bed. Tomorrow is work and getting ready for a shoot Saturday evening (so glad this one is at my house, and not at a remote abandoned military base like the last one...so at least there's no packing involved). I've got a few more props to get together/make for Saturday, so...

    Production Diary: Music Video

We have one more bit to film this Saturday evening. Luckily this part is being filmed at my house, so at least that simplifies things. Basically, we're filming a series of shots that will be a guy watching TV. As soon as we're done filming, my co-producer and I are going to review the footage...

editing Something's not quite right here (drone footage)

That's really interesting, because the original footage is half the speed of this, and I sped it up. Maybe I'll try going back to the original speed...

editing Something's not quite right here (drone footage)

Great stuff. That "prosecuting target" thing is actually something a drone operator said in a documentary my co-producer watched, which is why we used it. The way it cuts out at the end is actually because someone is watching it on TV (and it's the TV shutting off). I'm thinking the static may...

editing Something's not quite right here (drone footage)

Yeah, the first part is pretty well out of my control at this point (originally we were going to have an RC helicopter type thing to film this part, but had to make do with a zip line). But I'll work more on the second part.

color-grading Machete Kills Color Grade Article

Gives me some hope for the way most of my raw footage looks. :D

editing Something's not quite right here (drone footage)

I'm creating some fake "drone" footage for the end of the music video I'm producing, and something's just not quite right with it. I have a few ideas on what it needs, but this is kind of my first real attempt at compositing footage like this, so I'd like to get some more opinions before I spend...

color-grading Machete Kills Color Grade Article

I love this stuff! Thanks for sharing. Color grading is my favorite part of the entire post-production process. It can have such an incredible impact on the final feel of a film.

AFI FILM FESTIVAL - ANYONE NOTIFIED?

It says right on their website: "All filmmakers who have submitted films will be notified of decisions during the second week of October."

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

The Halloweentown films...yeah, they're my Halloween season guilty pleasure. They're not very good, maybe a 4/10 over the course of the series. But as far as pure entertainment value goes, I'll give them a 7/10.

    Festivals for Music Videos?

I'm looking for some festival recommendations that have music video categories. Right now we're looking at submitting to SXSW (we're in pretty good shape to meet the deadline on that one, even though it's right around the corner), NXNE, and the Los Angeles Music Video Festival, but I'm wondering...

cinematography How do I make distracting background colors less noticeable?

This is one of those times when "fix it in post" is actually applicable. Toning down a color like that is not difficult.

    Production Diary: Music Video

I may put the rough cut up on Vimeo (with a password) for anyone who wants to take a look. Gotta just double-check with my co-producer to make sure he's cool with that. But I'll definitely do some side-by-side comparison shots with the rough cut vs. the final video when it's done.

Copyright question. A scene inspired from another film.

Two things: First, why copy a scene from an established film? Why not come up with something different/better/more original? I'm asking these as serious questions, not rhetoricals. If you have reasons, great. But if you don't, I'd reconsider. Second, could they sue you? Sure. Anyone can sue...

Tips to make my first real shoot not fail?

Have a clear vision of what you want, but at the same time, be flexible. If things don't go as planned, be prepared to deal with that without getting angry or upset (even if it means taking a five minute break to go be angry or upset not in front of your cast and crew so you can come back and be...
