What are distributors doing for indie today?

I see a fair number of low budget independent films in Redbox kiosks so it isn't a one in a million situation. Like Netflix, they buy the DVDs and rent them out an infinite number of times which ultimately hurts revenue in the long run in my opinion. Yeah, Netflix only buys 30 to 60 DVDs if...

What are distributors doing for indie today?

Based on my first hand experience, I am totally bypassing the DVD route other than creating copies for cast and crew via Createspace. By the time you pay to press the DVD and ship it, there is no profit to be made. I don't know what Redbox pays per DVD, but I suspect it isn't much for indie...

a little insecure question to film makers/directors

LDS, I'm not sure why you aren't booking more jobs because you do have a "look." I don't think the problem is your height, but it may be your auditioning skills. And yes I have cast a male that was 5'2" in a feature length movie as a lead. See it here...

    Shady SAG actor

This actor isn't shady. It's worse. He's delusional and crazy. I'm guessing you already had a heart to heart talk with about how his actions will may screw up a golden opportunity everyone. First, I would talk with the other actors and crew to put some pressure on him. Some may have become...

    Outcall: My Latest Feature

My latest feature Outcall is now available on Amazon as a VOD. It's a supernatural thriller about a family man who is haunted by the ghost of a murdered escort that he met online. I made it for about a thousand dollars. If anyone has questions, especially anyone who is contemplating making a...

"Surviving Family" is now on iTunes!

When will it be on Amazon? It's my preferred way of watching.

    Script coverage

I'll do a page of notes for seventy dollars. I won the grand prize at Slamdance and Amazon Studios for two different feature screenplays. And unlike virtually any reader you might hire, I have produced and directed three feature films and an animatic. I don't need the money, and I wouldn't...

"Surviving Family" is now on iTunes!

How did you arrive at your price point? Was there any consideration of going lower? Did any of your stars help promote the movie on iTunes through Twitter or Facebook and did it help?

How does writing a horror script, save on budget exactly?

The biggest cost savings of producing a horror film would be that it is a genre where name actors are not needed for the film to do well. A great poster and trailer can sell a horror movie while a drama or an action movie generally needs name actors to succeed.

Where do you buy your screenplays from?

The job of the director is to know the story inside and out including all of the motivations and beats as well as augmenting the story. If the screenwriting and directing aren't separated, the screenplay may not be fully realized and problems won't be identified. A director can certainly ruin...

Where do you buy your screenplays from?

The obvious advantage to writing your own screenplay is that the story is tailored to your specific tastes, needs. and resources. It's been my experience that most aspiring directors want to write their own screenplays because they feel the movie isn't really theirs unless they do which I think...

"Surviving Family" is now on iTunes!

On a side note, I was able to get my movie Geek Mythology onto iTunes by turning it into an app. It's not the ideal way as apps have their own approval process and you aren't listed as a movie. http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/indie-films-itunes-end-around-sell-them-apps-17230/

"Surviving Family" is now on iTunes!

Thanks Nick for the explanation! But filmmakers also need to consider that getting their film onto iTunes is far more expensive due to higher quality control while getting onto Amazon is almost cost free. So there is a cost / benefit analysis to be made.

"Surviving Family" is now on iTunes!

Hi Mara, Thanks for your previous response! I see that Surviving Family is only available on iTunes. but not on Amazon. Was this intentional? I assume it will be soon. Will SF be available on other platforms or is Nick still working on that? Phil

"Surviving Family" is now on iTunes!

Hi Mara, First, congratulations! Being a producer is often a thankless job, and I tip my hat to you. (1) Did you need to provide a 5.1 mix? The reason I ask is that the iTunes deliverable list indicates that in order to sell your movie in HD that you need to provide a 5.1 mix; yet your page...

For Sale: Low Budget Noir Thriller Screenplay - Feature

I have a screenplay called Incall a very low budget thriller about a family man that finds himself in the middle of a blackmail plot when he visits an escort but accidentally kills her pimp. PM me if you are interested in seeing it. I wrote it to produce myself but I'm weary of making no budget...

archived-videos Assisted Fishing free on Vimeo

Hi Joe, First, I want to let you know I liked Assisted Fishing. Thanks for sharing! It has an infectious energy that won me over despite its shortcomings. It reminded me of Caddyshack, Meatballs, and the comedies of that era. I also appreciated that it wasn't filled profanity and vulgar...

    A Motiveless Killer???

There's nothing wrong with not having a motivation. The iceberg in Titanic didn't have a motivation. The problem is that 90 minutes of screen time needs to be filled. So when you have a one dimensional character, your story can lack richness. At least a third of HALLOWEEN is about mundane...
