Decent-paying jobs that use film skills?

Employment in the Digital Media departments at schools and universities are a great way for those versed in film and digital media to earn a steady income while still having time (and access to advanced equipment) to work on personal projects.

    Indie Detroit film maker

Welcome! Detroit is a strange filmmaking community. I find it very cutthroat and needlessly competitive. I try to help out where I can, but most of the time my out-reached hand gets stabbed. That said, there are many regional festivals you should consider submitting to, including the Detroit...

Merry Christmas, Paper Twin Productions! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=308NrE5xj1Y I'm sorry this isn't better, but forces were working against me. First, I haven't been able to come up with a decent story in months and it's pissing me off. So I decided I'd make a little postcard tour down...

    Secret Santa II

DONE. And not as happy as I was hoping to be with it. How does the posting work? I think last year a new thread in the "other" section of the screening room was started just for this purpose. When can we start posting?

Kubrick's Fear and Desire debuts tonight

Aside from Robert Osborn seeming less-than-impressed (almost medicated, really), it was a pretty fascinating re-watch and a great restoration. You can see some of the elements of Kubrick's style in early, early form. What did the rest of you think?

Kubrick's Fear and Desire debuts tonight

If you have a Laser Disc of Fear and Desire on a double feature with Killer's Kiss you are instantly my god.

Kubrick's Fear and Desire debuts tonight

Stanley Kubrick's first feature, Fear and Desire, debuts tonight at 8:00 on Turner Classic Movies. Fear and Desire on TCM I'm no longer the coolest kid in school. I rented a badly bootlegged copy in Chicago 12 years ago and made a dub myself, of course. Of all the Kubrick ephemera the people...

    I won an award!!

That has to be the coolest major award in all of filmmaking. I'm deathly serious. I'd trade all my meager success to win something like that... and the video was hilarious as well.

    Public Access Financing

Thanks! Indeed, my brother and I. He is the shooter and the producer. I write and direct. I can barely turn my Vixia on, much less focus it. But I'm learnin'. Part of our grant proposal involved describing how we would care for and insure the new equipment, where we would store it and lock it...

    Public Access Financing

Here's an avenue for financing your films that'd I'd not considered before: We just got a grant from the Lansing Community Media Center (public access television) for $10,000 in new equipment in exchange for producing 12 hours of original programming over the next year. They had up to $120,000...

When the talent isn't performing it like you need it, how early do you say "Cut." ??

I make it a point to have a great relationship with my actors beforehand so that when they aren't giving me what we need, I can say cut and not waste any time. But often I'll wait it out, looking for something interesting...anything...maybe even a certain look that would be a great cutaway...

    editing under estimated film length

The one-minute-per-page average is only for feature length...shorts can go way over or way under, depending on what they are. This happens to me all the time. It's why I gave up 48 hour projects...my scripts were always four pages but ended up being 10 minutes films. Or the opposite.
