Making indie films as a career?

There's a fella here in a Detroit who runs his own video production business. I think they do local access TV commercials, weddings and event videography primarily. But in his spare time he makes no budget indie shorts and has been quite successful and prolific on the regional festival level...

I can't seem to see the images, and the links all take me to "the flickerpictures domain has expired." Hmmm...not sure what's going on. Feel free to hit me up off-IT if you need help figuring it out.

story Writing a story in real time.

Check out the Johnny Depp movie Nick of Time which was an action movie done in real time and kept me quite entertained. You might get some pointers there on where/how to place your major turning point events.

Anyone read any indie film magazines?

CinemaScope is my favorite film magazine. This is where I first read about films I think I'd like to see. The critics can be ponces at times, but it always makes for an interesting read. It's not a "how to make indie films" magazine, if that's what you are looking for.

If you have to choose only one film

They do in Britain, and quite well. Check out Mad Dogs and Luther for two recent stellar examples. As for keeping one film if all films are deleted? My answer changes daily. Today I think it's Coppola's The Conversation.

    Production Photos - Share Yours

On the set of 2010's "The Tank": The wall with the bars had bullet proof glass that we had to spend four hours busting out with a sledgehammer so we could run our cables into it. It was also murder getting good sound...six concrete surfaces makes for lots of echo. Plus it smelled like...

Interview with Jim Vines and Justin Samuels

Pretty clear from the outset that Vines is merely giving Samuels an increasingly longer length of rope with which to hang himself. The classic excuses: didn't have time to hustle because he had to work to pay rent, met one agent at a conference one time and didn't pitch a script, no one can...

story comming of age or murder story?

What if what happens in the back seat mirrors the murder (not directly, of course.) Twist it a bit...what if the girl is more aggressive than the guy is ready for, and she gets upset and (metaphorically/emotionally) stabs him while the other stabbing is happening?

    Shooting a Potentially Boring Event

Anyone going to be actively quilting? If so, catch that process. If not, have someone talk about the process. Aren't some quilts made to tell stories or commemorate events? If so, the quilters would love to tell the story. Talk to them about it. Or do the direct cinema approach, the...

    Locations: Our Necessary Evil

I have found it useful to find what I call "generic" locations: places that can be made to look like a LOT of other things. The back of my music store is a plain white concrete block building with a loading dock surrounded by a white brick wall and parking lot. This has stood in for the Hertz...

story comming of age or murder story?

I'm a sucker for coming of age stories. And The Who. (what's the difference?) Go for the feature! Every week there are murder stories on crime-of-the-week shows (both fiction and non-fiction and Law and Order which makes a weekly deal out of stories "ripped from the headlines.") Boring. I want...
