IMO, part of the "problem" would be filmmakers lumping things together as if they all carry the same definition. Story Script Movie/Motion Picture --- Three completely different things. Learning the differences can help a ton.

Effect always goes before the final grade. You can do a 1 light so you know how to present the effect, but you never do any final grading before adding an effect.
