character Question on how to write this type of character.

Heh. I love that, and it's more or less my thoughts, too. I smoke quite a bit, and sometimes it just happens to work itself into something I'm writing, but it's rarely "essential" to the story or character. I think it really just depends on the overall scene you're going for and what elements...

    Does this title sound good?

I like that. I'd say it's absolutely true. I hate, hate, hate coming up with titles. My vote would be for "First Reign", too, but it sounds way too much like a generic, direct-to-VOD/DVD title.

How much power does a producer have over a director?

I co-produced a fairly ambitious play, and although I would imagine that's a universe different from filmmaking, the notion of being responsible for so many aspects of the show beyond my main responsibility (acting) was a nightmare, and I'm never going to do it again if I can absolutely help it...

    Trailers--is there a downside?

I would love to learn more about that. I would love to be able to cut down what I'm trying to express down to the essentials. It's not something I would need for everything, but it might still be something useful to have in the tank.

Should I only 'write what I know'?

Agreed. I think you start out on what you know in terms of what's driven you to write in the first place, and as you get more confident you begin to look for ways to continue to drive yourself and grow creatively. You don't want to get stuck in a rut, but you don't want ambition to be your...

Why are zombie films still so popular?

I have no idea. I think the zombie thing ran it's course a long time ago, but I did enjoy "Walking Dead" and "Zombieland" to certain extents.

    Make up for men ?

The one I've heard of the most is Ben Nye. The makeup people I've worked with swore by it. Personally I've never had to really worry about that stuff for theater or film. With films I had to wear heavy alien makeup, and then there was that molding stuff they slapped all over me to make a fake...

    Bond 23

I've never been crazy about Craig as Bond (although I think he's a good actor, and I enjoyed Casino Royale), so I can't say I really feel one way or the other about this.

Does a short film have to have a story?

I think there should be some sort of narrative going on. Watch other short films to perhaps get a sense of the nature of creating that narrative in a limited amount of time? I do know what you mean though. There's a reason why my one "Short" film script is forty-freaking-minutes long (first...

movies What's the last film you watched? And rate it!

Thunder Road: 4/5 -I'm a huge Robert Mitchum, and this was just a lot of great, ridiculous fun.

    Writing tips

That's one of the few ways I make my meager living, but I mostly work with short fiction, non-fiction and novels.

    how do you practice writing?

I can't say I ever really "practice" writing for the most part. I just kind of work at different things. I think it's good that I'm able to move between scripts, short fiction, poetry, book/film/music reviews, essays, novels and all the rest. It allows me to move on for a moment when I'm really...

Ending Rewrite Need Response ASAP SHOOT SCHEDULED TOMORROW

I could be reading this wrong, but it sounds to me like the boyfriend would learn his lesson simply through the course of events. I guess you could have him run into an old friend who mentions off-hand something about his behavior that brings everything home for him. He is shown somehow the...

    filmmaking and real world

I write for a living, so that kind of gives me time in general. Unfortunately I get bogged down in stuff that like reviews for the literary journal I work, editing my second novel and the like, so I don't get to focus specifically on scripts as much as I'd like. I also just took on an editing...
