I have a hv40 but have found with the macbook I'm using at the moment there isn't a firewire port. Any ideas how I could get the video off the camera without one?

With a tape-based camera like that you're pretty much out of luck without a firewire port. You could try a USB capture device and go through the analog output, but you'll probably only get SD that way and the quality won't be great.
damn, looks like I'll need to flog it and see if I can upgrade the camera...
Does the macbook have a Thunderbolt port? This might help if it does:

Although it says it's a "Firewire 800", it only mentions hard drives or audio devices... I would double check first.
