I F$%#ing HATE noises !!!!!!

Shot a scene today ( Wednesday ) in the same location I shot at Sunday... Could I get decent sound ?? NOOOOOO ! Sunday was quiet. , today wind gusts 15mph jet planes coming in every 90 seconds LOUD !!!!! plus we shot at 4:30 right next to an office park and guess what ? quitting time ! yeah cars starting right and left GRRRRRRRR !

I had a dead cat on the shotgun, I was 2 - 3ft away from the talent so i had it mounted on the shoulder mount w/ the cam, had a lav on her too. Still got wind noises from time to time. We tried to pace it between gusts , planes ohh and cars starting yeeech !

OK, breathe, relax, high pass filter, EQ and maybe salvage enough to make it work. Im doing a surreal flick, so some background noise / music can cover.

People in the country have it made..maybe a moo or two, frogs, crickets but what else ?

Crickets galore, especially when the humidity is up down south.
And in the distance there's always some jack@ss with a lawnmower or chainsaw.
But the hands down best has got to be the [expletive] cicadas.
By the effing hundreds of thousands in all the GD trees and forests, across every county and state.

Just keep hitting replay morning noon and night. :)

Country shoots are notoriously horrible.

I was on a shoot a couple years ago where we had to have a starter pistol shot off before each take for 20 seconds of silence from the cicadas. Those guys can get up over 100 dB SPL (loud bar music)

We would only have enough silence to get good dialogue for about 20 seconds, then they would start up again, then we'd shoot the gun again...

Once we tossed sand and then sprayed water to suppress crickets - we managed about 90 seconds at a time.

Has anyone shot at around 5am or sunrise in a bigger city?
How's the noise situation generally at that time?

It depends upon the city and where you are in the city. NYC is noisy 24/7, the smaller surrounding cities (50k to 150k population) are better in the early morning and on Sundays - but not by much.

I remember sone time where they were testing a church bell while we were trying to do a short and some idiots honking as they drove by to ruin the sound. It did manage to win an award when it eventually was done.

Heh, where I live we practically live under a flight path. At my cousin's old college campus, they had a bell tower that would literally go off every 30min. Maybe even sooner. Add that to planes, helicopter, people, and wind, you have the most perfect audio storm =].

Well Im working on eiditing the short film now....almost have a lock on the video, maybe adds some transitional cutaways. Im managing to get the sound just OK considering. Im not an audio genius so Im sure I have made some mistakes...hard to get ambient sounds out of the dialog..Im countering by adding audio effects to the dialog. The fact that Im making a surreal, nightmarish video will help in the final mix...maybe a week away from a finished product
