can anyone tell me how to embed YouTube videos on here, so that it can be seen on the forum?... when I try all I see is white box or embed code ?

Just put everything after the equals sign between the YT tags.

The example here has a link of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-G0BvvagrU
I only need to put the following for it to work:
i-G0BvvagrU wrapped with YT tags. Hope this helps!
