Writing An Adaptation

Anyone got tips for writing an adaptation of a book into a screenplay.
The book I guess I'm most interested in adapting is 'Less Than Zero' (Bret Easton Ellis) because I'd like to make an adaptation that's more like the book than the film that's been done was.
Any advice or help? :)

Are you doing this just for personal satisfaction?

The trouble with adapting for screen is that differences from the source text are inevitable. Look at 'Never Let Me Go' which Alex Garland adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro's novel (one of my favourite books). It was overly dedicated to the text and as a result has bombed both critically and commercially. What works on the page and what works on the screen are two very different things.

So my recommendation would be to not be slavish with your adaptation. Sure, some films to take too great a liberty with their source material, but with any adaptation there should be a level of compromise.

Not entierley for personal satisfaction, I mean, I love the book (I love everything Ellis writes ;) ) and I just feel like, because the book was so good, a film closer to the text would be great. So if I ever did write this screenplay, I'd want to make it into a film

I assume this is purely an exercise/practice? You don't actually own the rights to it, correct?

No I don't but I guess if I wrote the screen I'd try and get the rights if at all possible.
