Why don't more action movies aspire to be like Blood Diamond?

One thing I loved about that movie is the violence and chaos during the action scenes were much more brutal than most action movies. A lot of action movies try to make battle look adventurous and fun. But that movie does the opposite and make it look quite depressing. Why don't more action movies aspire to? My sister said she hated Avatar, because it was a dark emotional war story, but in the climax they made war look fun and adventurous and the good guys, as well as the bad guys, were proudly cheering their armies on, as if it were a sport.

She said if it was done much more dramatic and depressing like Blood Diamond or any other movie that does, she would have thought the tone was more even and deeper. I too could see an improvement there as well as other action films that make battle look too fun. So why don't more do it? Will you really loose your audiences or will they find it fresh and you'll gain more of a crowd?

Face it. People go to movies to have fun. That's why almost all hollywood movies have happy endings. I can name a couple good movies that were darker and didn't have the typical "hero saves the world and survives, while bad guys all die" type movie, but those usually don't get much popularity.

I think indie people are braver in this aspect as they usually try new things and take risks in story telling.

Well the first feature I wanna make does have enough action to be called an action movie, but much darker and the action is more terrifying and depressing. It's a new risk I wanna take, especially cause of the tragic story. Don't wanna pull have fun action scenes, in a sad story. So I hope the risk will gain popularity rather than loose the general audience.
