When would you use a lav microphone?

When would you use a lav microphone on set, especially when you're making a narrative film?

The only reason I could think of is when you're shooting a wide shot - with actors talking - where there's no way of hiding the microphone.

I'm curious to know what people think.

Thanks.

A better question, because it requires a much shorter answer, would be; when wouldn't you use a lav on set?!

As ando913 essentially said, even when lavs are not the primary mic, they are used as a backup, pretty much ubiquitously. Even on very good good sets (for sound) there are still usually numerous production sound errors from the boom mic/s and parts of the lav channels can often be used instead of having to resort to ADR.
