What's Missing/Needed in Indie ?

Hey gang!

I am curious, what is missing in the independent film realm - services (what type), equipment, crew, cost effectiveness, studio space, what?

What are some of your needs, wants, ideals on your wish list - from start to finish of your creative endeavor?

What are your gripes, frustrations? What are your hindrances?

How do you all feel about all coming together to help create a model of your dream scenario of a place to get what you need to create?

I want to hear about everything that makes for a stumbling block from inception of a project to post.

I want to know what irritates you about things as they stand in the indie world in current services?

I know that cost is always a huge stumbling block. So, you tell me, what are some possible remedies to this issue?

Basically, I want to know your wish list?

I have been studying this for a bit. I see some of the stumbling blocks - cost, space, crew, equipment, post, tech, so many things. But I want to hear from you.

There are so many amazing voices and works that come from indie. It's pure, and creates and rallies from a place, perspective, and spirit which NEEDS to be supported and propelled forward. Indie is innovation! Creating against the odds and with modest resources. So drop me an email, be innovative, tell me WHAT DO YOU NEED! It's okay if some of your ideas are a bit out there, or if you think it could never happen, or that no one would do it. Who knows, if you can dream it, there just might be someone crazy enough out there to do it!

My email addy is edensky@mail.com, or you can post here.

Maybe we can create a model of something that can give you what you need, with fewer stumbling blocks. And if the model works, maybe we can create more of them. If we can find a worthwhile model of what can best help you create, then maybe you can turn more of your financial resources towards distribution.

I think one of my biggest obstacles is knowing when your idea is ready to be presented. Many times we jump the gun and can't wait to get it out for the world to see, but it could use a few revision rounds. It's hard to know and let's be honest, it's hard to get a true professional unbiased opinion with out paying a lot for it.

There are so many things that are missing in indie films... Unfortunately it depends on the film maker on what they need....

However one big part that I see is needed: a better method for promotion and distribution of indie films.

Another thing that I see... Scriptwriting. Great quality story telling scriptwriting.

Meaningful distribution.

Creating marketable content is relatively easy.
Once you have it in hand, in the can, or on hard drive... who gives a sh!t?

It might just be me but for some reason it seems a lot of indie films, do not have as much story, compared to bigger budget industry movies. So I feel that a lot could use another half of a story, but perhaps something happens a lot on set. A set back which causes rewrites and scrappings during shooting, but that's just a guess, and will have to hear from the pros on that.

Dedication. There are too many dead projects out there that serve as a negative image to those who really push the envelope.

When people think indie, I'm willing to bet most of them think "ppfft... it won't last even if it IS good, so why bother?"

This post is a LOT to respond to... if you take a look at the developer forums on the Delura website, you'll observe some of the "frustration" concerning the process of how to make things fair for a collaborative project that aims to become financially self-sustaining. You may be able to get some answers to your other questions through my blog history... though i've made 372 posts as of today so you have a lot of content to go through!

My dream scenario for my animated series would have the following happening:

- Our audience actively criticizing our work, good and bad... this gives us the "radar" we need to always change in a positive light.

- Instead of doing nearly everything myself, I would have someone who specializes in an area do that task (IE: Have a pro modeler do MODELING... have a pro compositor do COMPOSITING!!). I am the kind of person who is adept at many, but master at none... I use my small bits of experience in every conceivable media field to help me manage the project and communicate with those I work with.

- I am able to fund the series and everyone who contributes to it entirely through digital downloads... be it in the form of video, comic page bundles, or other digital content. I would have physical DVDs or comparable media for sale, but that would not be my primary product. As an employer, I'd be helping to make a positive impact to the economy.

- Working with cool people who care about the project as much as I do. It really makes or breaks enthusiasm and energy.

- FREE CONTENT (ad-monetized): We would release at least 12-15 episodes (10-15 minutes each) yearly, complete 100 comic pages, and perhaps even a few videos released by other Delura staff just for the fun of it. PREMIUM (direct sales): 4-6+ videos yearly, with several new render comic arcs available for purchase yearly.

Though what i've described above is modest compared to big budget standards, it would be a dream to reach this point.
