Vegas 8.0 how to pan with visible line following?

Heya fellas :) bit of a noob question probably, say i want to pan across a map, how do i make a red line follow from place to place visible as your watching it???? and is it possible to fade images over certain parts

i.e i have a huge map i pan across and zoom in on one part of it (know how to do that)

i want some text to come up over that part I.E "Sample Text"

then i want to pan across from that part of the map with the sample text... to another part of the map but have a line follow the panning from the first place to the second, and have the sampe text stay with place number 1

is this possible?

Thanks

Create a new image that matches the map in size, that will overlay the map. Put line on the new image and leave the rest of the image transparent. You'll want to save the image as a PNG file so you have an alpha channel.

Layer the new image over the top of the map and set it's movement to match the map, so they move together and it looks like the line is drawn on the map.

Now add a mask that covers half of the frame, that will be applied to the image with the line, so that the line will appear to be drawn, as it moves out from under the mask.

This should only take about 10 minutes, if you understand what I'm trying to explain, and you know how to work with masks (or mattes, clip regions, etc.).

well that looks really handy, but i dont know how to do it :D

i created the new image in psp, saved it as a png just the line, with the rest transparent, when i overlay it onto my media its the line but the rest of it is white, it completely overtakes the media so you cant see the panning underneath it, and i dont know how to do masks on vegas :(

There may be a setting for your overlay layer where you tell it to use the alpha from the PNG ... either alpha type or composite mode. A mask is generally something you apply as a filter. Search your help, if you have it, for "image mask" or "matte". You might also find a crop will do it.

The only other way I know of to do it would be to create an image sequence and rotoscope the line onto it, progressively, but that will take forever and will be hard to adjust later.

This may be a great opportunity to learn more about Vegas! Unfortunately, I'm not much help there. I could show you exactly how to do it in Final Cut Pro, but that would not help you much. :(

Ok, since I've never actually done precisely what you're talking about, I made a quick test clip. I think my matte was a bit too diagonal. It might be also look better if the matte were dynamic, but I just used a static image.

the matte (if this were shaped differently, you could get a better look)

the result as an MPEG4

I'm not sure if this will be of any help, but it might spur your imagination. You could use particle effect in Lightwave3D (or other tool?) to create an animated line, but that seems like a lot of trouble for such a simple effect.
