tv-writing TV writing question...

I've read that, when writing for television, you can use camera directions, which shouldn't be used in a spec script(for a feature). Does this mean they're compulsory to use, or they're a matter of choice? Can you write an episode without using them? I have a few ideas for television series, but I'm a little afraid to try this...Thanks for answering!:)
