Trick filming...creating a dual image

How do you create a dual image of yourself on film? Can it be done without the need to edit or is all that done in the editing room?

If the camera uses a mini dv cassette?

Thanks.

There are a few posts about this in the forum already.

The short answer is that yes, you will have to do it in post production and composite two separate shots together.

If you were shooting on FILM you could do it entirely in camera by masking off half of the frame, filming the segment, rewinding the film, masking the other half of the frame and filming the clone. Since digital doesn't work that way, it can't be done that way.

Thanks. I remember having a manual camera where I could do that. Take a half photo, rewind the film and take the other half. I was wondering if it could be done without the editing room.
I haven't taken editing classes yet and wont have access to use the editing room in this production class I am taking...so when I use the camera, its whatever I film, I end up with.
