Title Sequence

In creating the opening credits for my short (an homage to the classic comedians, silent and talking), I wanted to add an effect that makes the sequence seem old and worn--squiggly lines and the like. Think back to the old 16mm films you'd watch in science class where the print had been viewed for so many years and so many times that it seemed to be skipping and filled with scratches. I've seen this effect done (most recently on a Preston Sturges documentary on the MIRACLE AT MORGAN'S CREEK DVD), but was wondering if anybody knew how to achieve it. Can it be done using Final Cut or is there another brand of software I need?

There are software programs that give digital video a film-like look to it. You could probably adjust the settings of the film look to achieve that classic film style. A few that come to mind are

CineLook

Magic Bullet

Try a web search for other choices.

You might also check the filters that come with your editing software. I use Sony Vegas and it has "film-effect" filters built into it.

Shoot some 16mm, scratch it up. ;)

LOL it aint hard. Someone send me some film I can age it out real good :)

On topic, Vegas has "Film Effects" built in as a plug in - choose from dust, scratches, hair, flicker, grain, etc. and the amount you want. Then you might want to feather the edges for the extra look.
