The Unofficial Song of the Day Thread

So, let's play a little game. Not so much a game as just sharing music. I find music inspiring both artistically as well as personally. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone so I wanted to randomly share some music and hope that others will as well.

Simple guidelines so this doesn't go insane:

1. Everyone gets ONE song per day. Feel free to give whatever context or background you desire. Is it a song that gets you pumped to work out? Or is it one that gives you dozens of story ideas?

2. No Hating on people's taste in music in this thread. Period. If you don't like a song, come back later or post one that you do, but please refrain from "Metal sucks, or Rap is all clicks and whistles" type comments. This isn't a thread for debating the merits of genre, it's for sharing music that inspires you.

3. Whenever possible try to post ONLY THE AUDIO for the song. Music videos are great and all, but for inspirational purposes just the music please. Now that I am trying this, it's actually pretty tough.

Having said that, let's begin:

"Next time you want to paint with razor blades and need a canvas, use my skin."

Great thread idea, David!

Nice beat, and surprisingly good lyrics. I like it!

For my choice today, the one, the only, the incomparable...

Nina Simone and Ne Me Quitte Pas.

('cause I need a little weeping to balance out all the Christmas joy).

Brilliant choices thus far, gentlemen.

The subtle sounds of Sigur Rós. Not a key-track in their catalogue, yet i couldn't refrain. This is today.

I like this work because it's meandering, like a mandala. Lots of visuals pop up while listening. :)

This is the song in my head at the moment. Never Hear Surf Music Again by Free Blood, I hope this is a good version because my laptop is playing up and I can't hear it. I got into this song from the 127 Hours trailer...

Love the thread idea, David :)

Gorgeous. Like you say, it's not one that's played all the time but it's definitely one of my favourites… I used it in the temp score at the end of the feature I'm editing, impossible for the composer to beat.

Mine today…

I actually prefer the live version they did on an open top Parisian tourist bus, but it's got a video accompaniment - I just love how relaxed yet upbeat they always make me feel.

Definitely a good idea for a thread.

I use pandora a lot, and that's a great way to hear new music. I imagine this thread could be a great way to hear music outside of the material I'm normally exposed to. Lots of good stuff posted, so far.

David, at first I was surprised by your post, but then I thought to myself, "well, he is from the Bay Area". That is a very Bay Area sound. Love it.

I think I'll be a little bit of a sore thumb on this thread. Maybe it's cuz I'm a bartender, and we tend to like dancy-pop-music to get amped for a shift (and for cleaning).

Here's the current catchy pop-tune in my head:

Great idea for a thread, I definitely just found some new tunes. Thanks every one :D

I must say though, mellow much? Anyway, here's my choice for the day

It's different for me; I tend to avoid music most of the time. Music pulls me out of whatever I'm doing - it breaks my concentration. Also, it's a little difficult to listen to music when you're doing audio post!:D

For me music is something to be savored and/or appreciated. On the long drive home from Vermont in the beginning of Sundays blizzard my wife and I - to the dismay of the kids whose iPods, DVD player and video games had run out of power - tripped down memory lane (David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust) and then listened to real musicianship, which I find very lacking these days.

Recently we've been on a Rodrigo y Gabriela kick. Nothing to see or hear except pure talent.

Sorry that it's a real video...

They also cover Led Zeppelin and Metallica in their own unique style - highly entertaining!

Awesome tracks everyone. Thanks!!

Some stuff I had truly forgotten, like what an amazing vocalist Nina Simone was (is?). I <3 m some Rodrigo y Gabriela.

@Cracker - I thought that one might throw people - but Sage is the man. It was hard to pick something of his to post. If you are at all in to beats and poetry I recommend his work. Right up there with Aesop Rock, Talib Kwalil (sp?) Brother Ali, Atmosphere, Blackalicious, and a handful of others. I like Pandora, but I tend to use Grooveshark if I want to listen to an artist of my choosing instead of a radio station format.

Can't wait to hear what is moving people next, keep 'em coming!

This morning I needed a little motivation, a little reminder:

"So I will rise like the ashes from a building as it burns..."

This piece has helped me structure a montage sequence for a script on First Nation Peoples.

This song gets played a lot right now-going through some self evolving/change, and maybe some people don't understand it(surprising how many do understand actually lol)

"I am a question to the world, not an answer to be heard" :)

EDIT: to answer the "where have I heard this song before?"-it was used in Disney's Treasure Planet, during a montage of Jim and his childhood-very touching I thought.

A little bit of Sufjan Stevens for my song de jour...

NB: This is not the real video, but the closest I could find to having no video at all...

Charles, I like that last one.

David, you might like this one. The lyrics are nothing very creative, but the beat is about as unique as I've ever heard, and pretty badass. I might be wrong, but I believe these guys are Bay Area.

This was my soundtrack yesterday. It was a perfect overcast day and I was a cleaning machine, and had it turned up to 11!
