The Gambler

Hi everyone, I haven't been on in here in awhile. I've written two scripts in my absence and would like to know your thoughts on this one. The log line and synopsis are below. I already have a couple producers interested. It's a low budget crime drama set in Detroit. Thanks for the feedback!

Log line

Driven and tortured by personal demons an ex mafia hit man, Micky Justice, goes back to his old life to save his nephew and exorcise his past.

Synopsis

“The Gambler”, which takes place in Detroit, tells the story of ex mafia hit man, Micky Justice, his nephew Tommy, and Tommy’s pregnant girlfriend, Bonnie. Tommy runs into trouble with the mob after an associate blames him for stealing cocaine. Tommy goes to his Uncle Micky to get them out of the pinch, while Micky has ulterior motives for going back to Detroit. Paulie, a 35 year police detective veteran is days from retiring when he is faced to deal with having put Micky in prison 30 years ago, even though Micky was innocent. The film is arranged in four parts: Prelude, “Tommy & Bonnie”, “The Jew”, and “Micky & Justice”.

The Prelude opens with a scene from the middle of the film where Micky Justice is sitting on a chair giving a monologue to the camera. It is not apparent what he is doing or why he is there. It then cuts to 1977 to a young Micky Justice in his late 30’s as he is being hung over the Ambassador Bridge by Catherine and Michael Sorvino as they think he stole their money. Catherine Sorvino is the boss and Michael is her younger hot headed brother. Micky stays calm smoking a cigarette and joking while dangling from the bridge. Micky is saved by Joe West, the boss and the man Micky has looked at as a father for the last 20 years. Joe then asks Micky to take a bid for him, which Micky agrees to as he feels obligated to do so. The Prelude ends with the sound of a closing prison gate.

The “Tommy & Bonnie” chapter opens 30 years later with Tommy and his best friend, Jimi, going to pick up a key of cocaine from Sid, who works for Michael Sorvino. Michael, now in his late 60’s has become the boss of the family. Sid threatens Tommy for allegedly stealing 50 keys of cocaine and tells him he has 48 hours to get it back. After Tommy leaves we find out that Sid stole it and is blaming it on Tommy. After rushing home to his pregnant girlfriend, Bonnie, Tommy tells her what happened. Tommy convinces Bonnie to go with him to find his Uncle Micky who would help them.

Paulie, an honest, police detective who is days from retiring has been taking care of his ex wife, Gracie because she has cancer. His ex wife, also shares a daughter with Paulie, named April. Paulie has been tormented by the fact he put away Micky Justice 30 years ago even though he was innocent. Paulie is in his last week of duty when Micky comes calling.

Meanwhile Sid is having a hard time convincing Michael Sorvino that Tommy stole the cocaine and not Sid. Michael has his other goons follow him to find out. At this point Tommy and Bonnie get to Uncle Micky’s trailer. After a bit of convincing, Micky realizes that he can exact revenge on Michael Sorvino for killing Joe West, while saving his nephew at the same time. Micky fails to mention this to Tommy and Tommy has no idea Micky still has enemies in Detroit after 30 years.

“The Jew” opens with Paulie learning that the most despised five mafia lawyers in Detroit have been executed. They are all face down on the Detroit river front and all are missing their right ear. When Paulie arrives at the crime scene, he is met by Collins. Collins is a young, cocky, kiss ass that nobody likes. Paulie and Collins argue while at the scene, but Collins thinks Paulie knows something that he’s not saying.

Tommy is now on the hunt for an enigmatic underground character known only as “The Jew” as Uncle Micky has instructed, however he is having problems locating him. Once Micky tells Tommy that the “The Jew” is always at a bar downtown, Tommy and Bonnie rush over there. Tommy and Bonnie are given a mysterious suit case and an address of where they can hide out, until it’s over.

While “Tommy is looking for “The Jew”, Micky is busy killing Michael Sorvino’s men one at a time and always cutting off their right ear. Michael Sorvino begins to get more paranoid and frustrated as Micky’s murderous malle ensues and is rapidly getting closer to Michael.

Paulie is dealing with Gracie’s cancer as best he can, but is having a lot of emotional problems. His emotional issues are mostly due to the fact that he put Micky away for something he did not do as Micky was taking a bid for Joe West, and Paulie knew it. Paulie always respected Micky since Micky never said a bad word about Paulie after Micky went into prison. Micky also did not say anything to anyone that he was innocent after Joe West was whacked by Michael Sorvino. Paulie knows that Micky Justice is responsible for all the recent murders, but struggles between what is right according to his profession and what is right in his heart. A decision must be made.

All the chapters converge in the final chapter entitled “Micky & Justice”. In this chapter Micky faces his demons, Paulie makes a crucial decision in his life, Tommy and Bonnie fight for their lives and of their unborn child, and Michael Sorvino finally faces the man that took his pride 30 years ago.

Funding for my script "The Gambler" will be secure soon and we are about to start pre production. Anyone that knows local Detroit actors and actresses feel free to send them my way. I'm very excited about this film as I feel it has a lot of potential. I've also received great feedback from several people in the industry.

Congratulations - financing a probably the most difficult part of the game. Let us know when your film's available.

Sorry, I just noticed that the above post is a year old. Hopefully it all went well for you.
