T.V. sound effect

Not sure what this audio effect is called but does anyone know how to make sounds sound like they are muffled as if they're coming from a T.V. and walkie talkie?

Speakerphone by AudioEase does very nice emulations; there are a couple in AltiVerb.

Some folks like FutzBox by McDSP.

Lacking the funds - as I'm sure that you are - you'll need to work with a parametric EQ and whatever reverb you may have. Or you can "Worldize" it.

Hey, mrpink. I don't know what audio produciton capabilities you have, but even if you don't have access to anything that can run a plugin, you can easily get in the ballpark by just rolling off the high and low freqs with some eq and adding some 'orrible sounding distortion/clipping to whatever midrange you have left. You'll need to fiddle a bit to get it to get it where you want it, but it's probabaly one of the easier effects to dial in manually.

There is a lot of difference between a typical TV sound and a walkie talkie though (you'll need to crank up the clipping more, and raise the low eq cutoff more on the latter). Make sure to use some professionally produced reference sound examples to check yours against.

Afterwards you can then drop in some ambience and reverb to tie it into the visual environment as per any other sound.

Hey A.D. my abilities are at Noon status of the lowest kind but i have been educating my self day by day. My equipment i am using, well. So far i am stuck with sony veags pro 12's audio stuff.
I know audacity is free but I can't stand it. Honestly I can't stand it. the program is just a complete mess I hate however thing is laid out and it is just confusing as all hell. But it is free but i would rather use a better free software if that exists seeing as i am low on funds by a lot.

Vegas Pro is one of the better NLEs when it comes to audio processing implementation, plug-ins and the like (although its audio export options really suck, IMHO); Vegas started out as a MIDI sequencer and then added DAW capabilities before transforming into an NLE - betcha didn't know that!

You already have EQ and reverb and a compressor and other appropriate plug-ins to come very close to what you want to hear. You need to listen to references - like a real phone or TV - so that you can "replicate" the effect on the audio you want to process. But I already said that, didn't I?

This type of plugin and research involved in making it is actually preserving old tech.

It sounds great, it's definitely fun, and it's really fast, but ask any sound designer and they would rather have the time and budget to "worldize" as much as they can, There's something special (and inherently organic) about real spaces, actual speakers, etc. that adds new depth and realism to a soundtrack.

But plug-ins like that are a godsend to smaller budget facilities and projects.
