Im guessing you are thinking about freelancing for film... however I freelance in the corporate film world and let me tell you its bloody hard!
I started off doing stuff for free, then i decided if i could earn the same amount in a day as a regular job I would be happy but quickly learnt I needed to make 4x that to cover costs and time etc.
The hardest thing I've found when starting out is jumping from free jobs to paid jobs.
The work I do is in no means a steady income and in this economic climate convincing a client that their company needs a video/film is near on impossible.
