Stunts Designed For Sci-Fi Characters

I'm sure some remember my posts about unqualified stunt coordinators for sci-fi on the East Coast.

The Stunt Coordinators I've had the horror of meeting and working with on the East Coast refuse to read character sheets and only try to show actors how to fight like humans.

Training the actors the wrong way to do stunts takes me and later viewers right out of the fantasy of the characters.

I remember one of my cyborg actresses showing me the stunt coordinator I fired was having her duck away from a breakaway axe that was supposed to shatter as it hit her because he saw the action that way. I told the actress, I wish I fired the stunt coordinator sooner. I corrected the stunt by having her stand rigid and let the breakaway axe shatter over her forearm.

The same stunt coordinator tried to get the cyborgs to shake and fall when we were shooting them getting struck by a missile in a greenscreen room. Here again, I had the cyborgs stand ridged because machines do not have human reactions.

Even the Special Forces adviser got it wrong thinking cyborgs need gun sites to shoot. I just did not have enough eyes behind my head to see his mistakes as well. I did explain later to him cyborgs don't need gun sites when they have built-in computer locks on targets.

Here again, this is why I'm bringing in my friend from the West Coast who has worked in science fiction and fantasy productions for over 20 years to work with me in IC3 to get the action right. I already feel better with the questions being asked to make sure things will be done right when the time comes.

The rookie nonunion stunt coordinators don't even ask questions. They are under the belief they know everything.

Sorry about the rant.

These stunt coordinators just don't care when they take people out of the fantasy when they refuse to learn about new characters with abilities that are new to them.
