Student camera

Hey guys!

Long time no speak (again)

I'm starting university in September and I need to get a DSLR and I budget is around £600.
For a student, what would you recommend I use?

Thanks as always

I'd agree on the body but not the lens. The 1.8 is just not that great for video, get an old nikon 50mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/2 (50mm on a crop sensor is a little tight as an only lens). Much better construction than canon's 1.8 and much easier to focus with for video.

As an aside; ItDonnedOnMe - do you use a mix of Nikon and other brand lenses? I've been hesitant from buying Nikon stuff, as I feel I'll start confusing myself when having to pull focus in the opposite direction.

Hi JP - For £600, I would pre-order a Panasonic G6 body for £549 from WEX or Amazon UK (when Amazon posts it) and get a 14-42 kit lens to go with it (£66.90 on eBay or £73 from Amazon UK as of this post).

This is a camera with no moire, which has a viewfinder and autofocus that actually work when you're shooting video (unlike a DSLR), and which shoots at 1080/60p for smooth slow motion and fast action (unlike the Canons).

Here is a Panasonic promo video (note the detail and the lack of moire on patterned subjects - please watch at 1080p):

And here it is compared to the previous DSL champion, the hacked GH2:

Hope this is helpful, and good luck at University.

Cheers,

I do - old nikon, pentax, and modern canons. The backwards focus can be an issue but once you do a few pulls with it you can switch mentally pretty easily. It's worth the trouble, they're nice lenses... I like the old pentax lenses too but you've got to do some surgery to make them fit on some cameras so they aren't for everyone.
