Squibs

Allow me to suck the fun out of your movie and say, unless you have some really, really good lawyers and one really, really good insurance policy for the shoot, don't use pyrotechnics at all. It's not that hard to simulate in post and digital squibs w/blood are much safer.

Failing that, compressed air and talcom powder work nicely. Hiding the tubes can be akward, it limits your action and shot angles but then again nobody has sued me for blowing a hole in their chest or God forbid putting an eye out.
