sound question

So for my webseries, I'm going with a Boom mic, and two wireless lav set up. What is the best way to go about recording sound with all three at once? I own a Zoom H4n but it only has two connections so can I use 1 receiver for both lavs, or am I going to have to get a mixer to run into the recorder?

can I use 1 receiver for both lavs?

No. Each transmitter needs its own receiver, and each trans/rec set needs to have it's own unique frequency. If you attempt to use one receiver with two transmitters at best they end up "stepping" on each other - only the one with the strongest signal will be received - and at worst they will completely cancel each other out.

am I going to have to get a mixer to run into the recorder?

Yes. If you use a mixer you would pan the boomed mic hard to one side of the recorder (left) and the combined audio of the lavs to the opposite side of the recorder (right). Editing the combined lavs track is problematical if the lines of dialog overlap.

Your best option is a multitrack recorder or, if your camera has decent audio implementation (XLR inputs), recording the lavs to camera and the boomed mic to the H4n.
