I do a lot of outdoor filming in low light conditions. I’m thinking about up grading from my Sony PD-170 to a Sony HVR-Z5U. I want to go HD and this camera looks awesome. Does anyone have any experience with the Z5?
I've shot my last 2 shorts with a Z5U, which was an upgrade from a Canon HV20. It has proved to be an excellent camera. Does real well in low light, though I always light everything anyway. I use a combo of ARRI 150s, some 60w aluminum scoops, plus a few inexpensive 600w Smith-Victor lamps. I always shoot in the 1080/24p mode. Plays very nicely with FCP6.
Here's a frame grab from our last completed short "Blood Therapy" (having it's 2nd festival showing this month in Oxford, MS). First short we shot with the Z5U. This is a 600w double-scrimmed key and an open 60w scoop as a kicker. Not the greatest lighting job, but I'm certainly no expert.
