cinematography Sony HDR-FX7 vs. Canon EOS 60D SRL

I am a film school student looking to buy a camera and I'm curious as to your opinions on the comparison of these two and what you think about them. Any other camera recommendations within that price range are welcome.

I'd lean towards the 60D, but it doesn't matter what I'd prefer - what do you want out of a camera?

For the 60D, you'll need a few lenses to get the most out of it, which will add quite a lot to the cost. Would you consider the cheaper 550D over the 60D?

Neither camera has an XLR input, so as well as decent cables, mic(s), boom pole etc. you'll need an external audio recorder if you want high quality sound (assuming you're not planning only working on silent films). However, the FX7 would give you okayish ambient sound in many situations - the 60D wouldn't.

Both cameras are fairly compact and not that suited to handheld shooting. The FX7 is certainly more ergonomic though, and shooting handheld without a shoulder mount and follow focus would be a lot easier than on the 60D.

Consider the post-production aspect too. With the FX7, you can archive the tapes for a fairly long time; with the 60D, unless you buy a new memory card every time it fills up, you'll need a fair bit of HDD space for the original copies alone, never mind the imported and converted footage.

Finally, what do you want to be eventually? If you want to be a drama-shooting DoP, I think the 60D is a much better choice because of the interchangeable lenses, sensor size (and the DOF control that comes with it) and completely manual controls. If you want to direct and shoot documentaries by yourself, the FX7 is a lot more practical, with much longer record times, cheaper media and a more practical form-factor.

There are obviously many more factors than this to consider, but I hope I've nudged you a little closer to the tight decision, whatever that may be.
