Sony Handycam HDR-XR550E

I am really tight on budget so i was wondering will Sony Handycam HDR-XR550E and a tripod stand be sufficient for a short film or should i head for a professional gear?

If you have not really done much, and you are on a tight budget, then don't go for pro-gear. A Handy-cam or a cheap DSLR will be good for you right now. The camera you are looking at is good, but it depends what you shoot, and how you shoot. If you are shooting quickly, a handy cam like the camera you mentioned would be better because you don't have to worry about things like white balance and focus. If you have time to set up shots and prepare, a DSLR would be better.

It depends what you are shooting. Generally, I would pick a D3200, but there are certain situations where I would choose the Sony HDR XR550E. I shoot narrative short films with time put into preparation and shooting. DSLRs suit me better.

If you are going to get a DSLR, I recommend a used T2i or T3i with a used lens. The T3i is basically the T2i with a swivel LCD screen.
